You may need to go to the laptops bios screen and change the boot order to CD/DVD drive first then the hard drive. Different computer have diffferent ways of accessing the bios you may need to wait for the splash screen and press F2 of F8 or even the Delete key. When you get in and have changed the boot order save and exit it should reboot, then a prompt will say press any key to boot from disc. Press any key and th einstallation process should start.

its possible, but even so why wont it let me boot x86? when i have it set to boot from cd/dvdrom it just sits there for about 30s flashing - then it boots to xp

Are you trying to dual boot, or just upgrade?
What build number of Win7 did you download (as an ISO)?
Are you sure the DVD you made is okay, or possibly corrupt?

I think in the OP he had mentioned that the dvd works in other machines except for his laptop.

I wonder if you need to update your drive's firmware.
