I bought a student copy of Windows 7 professional upgrade for my daughter whose machine currently runs XP Pro. When I try to boot from the disk in her machine I get a message, "BOOTMGR is corrupt. The system cannot boot."
When I try and read the CD in my own PC (it runs Windows 7 ultimate) I cannot even see the disk contents.
Is my installation disk corrupt?
Thanks for responding Ztrucker. I bought the software on a CD to make sure there were no issues with burning an original - no irony there then! I agree with your thinking that I should send it back but wanted to check with the many expert users who inhabit these forums if I was missing something - am I?
Are you booting the DVD (not CD) in a DVD drive? How to Boot your Computer from a Bootable CD or DVD
The error you are getting means it's bypassing the DVD and attempting to boot the HD. Make sure the DVD drive is set to boot first in BIOS, before HD. Are you getting the telltale "Press any key to boot DVD?"
Or use the one-time BIOS Boot Menu key given on first boot screen to trigger the DVD.
Once you boot into DVD, select Install Now, Custom install, use Drive Options to delete all partitions, create new as desired, full format before installing Win7 to first partition. Ignore the 100mb boot partition Win7 creates to place the Repair console on F8 Advanced boot Tools menu.
Hi gregrocker. I have tried this DVD in three different DVD drives in three different machines and get the same message each time. I have also changed the boot drive to DVD and do get the "Press any key to boot DVD" message on each machine. It is after that I get the "BOOTMGR is corrupt" notice. Personally I think the DVD is goosed and I have now received my RMA authorisation from the supplier.
It's rare, but couldn't be much else.
Once before this was solved by simply copying the DVD using ImgBurn, or extracting the ISO to burn another.
You will know if this will work and it's the physical disk rather than ISO if it passes official HASH check given here: Windows 7 RTM SHA-1 hash / checksums

Guess it depends on if you can wait for the new DVD to install. If not, leave the key blank and don't activate until you receive it.
