Trying to install but XP boots

Hi.

Ready to start to install Windows 7 Home Premium on my XP Home PC having passed the Windows 7 upgrade advisor OK.

Full install not upgrade.

Have set BIOS to boot from CD as 1st, 2nd and also 3rd device for good measure and although I can hear disk spinning, XP boots up rather that Windows 7 setup starting.

Anyone point me in the right direction please?

Thanks.

Hi there.
Yes have read the tutorials and in theory the Windows 7 disk should boot as CD is set in BIOS but when I 'Press any key to boot from CD or DVD' XP loads as normal rather than the Windows 7 disk taking priority.

ah i see are you using internal dvd/cd drive connected by sata to the motherboard? just asking because if you use a external usb dvd/cd player this does not work in my experience.

Dual Booting is it possible/reliable
[Quote]I will be installing Windows 7 onto a new 1TB HDD shortly[quote]
Therefore XP can not boot.

1) Remove all HD's.
2) Set BIOS to DVD first boot.
3) Fit New HD, set BIOS to New HD 2nd boot.

Are you Dual booting?

Can you post your specs.

Any specific ideas then as to why the CD drive spins as though ity is going to boot from there but is ignored and XP just starts as normal?

Don't want to put in a new HDD at this stage would rather wipe XP on this m/c.

BIOS definitely sey to CD Drive and not HDD.

How to Boot from DVD/CD drive

Where did you get Windows 7? Did you burn the DVD yourself?

Is this related to your previous Dual Boot thread?

Thanks gregrocker, two seperate threads here.

The Dual boot question is for a different PC, (PC No 1) I have not got around to that one yet and my question on the dual boot issue has been answered.

This thread is for a different PC (PC No2) where I will not be dual booting i.e. it will only have Windows 7 on it and XP is to be wiped from it in the process ~ I would normally let the Windows reformat the drive to do this but for some reason XP still booting from HDD although CD set in BIOS.

Hope this clears the confusion.

Where did you get WIn? Did you burn it yourself? Has it been used to successfully install before? How do you plan to activate this install?

Windows 7 installer is a DVD, not CD. So to boot it you need a DVD or combo drive set first to boot in BIOS setup, or triggered by tapping the one-time BIOS Boot Menu key at bootup.

You will want to wipe, not format the HD first as formatting erases nothing including corruption or infection. Wiping with one set of zeroes using Diskpart is recommended once you can boot the DVD: SSD / HDD : Optimize for Windows Reinstallation

If you are still unable to boot the DVD using a DVD drive confirmed set first to boot, try another bootable DVD in it to see if the drive is faulty. If not then burn another DVD or check ISO source.

Next, try writing ISO to flash stick using Ultra ISO trial version: on File tab Open ISO, on Bootable tab Write Disk Image, Format, Write. Boot under USB or HD's, wipe HD, Install.

You can also try wiping the HD using free Partition Wizard bootable CD which will autostart. Once wiped the DVD should likewise autostart if it is readable. http://www.partitionwizard.com/download.html
