OS crashed and cant install windows 7. fails during expanding windows

    Alright guys, here's my problem.

My laptop was running wingows 7 and then crashed. It was getting slower and slower, then crashed during a virus scan in safe mode. After that, it wouldn't boot up windows. It said something like disk error, press ctrl alt delete to restart. Safe mode doesn't work either. So now I'm trying to reinstall windows 7, and the installation fails when at expanding files. It says the files are corrupted and can't be installed. I've tried 3 diff windows 7 cds. It gives errors at different points during the expanding every time. Now its just hanging at expanding windows files (0%). Its been here for 20 mins so far. Please help!

    Hi and welcome.
That is a fairly new Laptop.

With what you have done and said it sould like your HD went bad and failed.
I would try to find a DOS run HD tester that could run from your CD/DVD drive to check format. What brand of HD? Many manuf. have a special utility disk to check and format HD.

Next step if it is a trashed HD is to buy a new one. $50 - $60 for a 2.5" laptop drive.

    Hope this helps a little.

Have you contacted where you purchased it from about a warranty or Toshiba

I would call Toshiba first and ask them.
I would just tell them that the HD was making a lot of noise then stopped working. (that is if it is under warranty)

To replace a HD on most laptops is easy. Read your guide first.
Many have seperate latched door on the underside for removal and replacement.
Sorry that allI can tell you. I will do some more research on the Toshiba site.

Have you checked to see if your BIOS has any built in utility to check HD?

Hey another strange thing is that using the windows 7 dvd I can get to system recovery options. Then I can click load drivers. When I do that it shows my my computer and all the drives. These are...

Local disk C: (221gb free of 222gb) tried to format it
Local disk D: with absolutely no info and kinda freezes when I try to open or eject or format it
    Boot X: 29.1mb free of 35.1mb

Then for devices with removable storage
Cd E: with the windows 7 cd
    And

Removable Disk F: no info with it.

What the heck is the d: and the f:??

And if my hdd is busted, why am I able to see all the diff drives?

It's not certain your HD is at fault. It could be an infection or other corruption.

Since you've already found yourself into the Load Drivers Mini-Explorer, copy out your files to external or DVD now from there: Copy & Paste - in Windows Recovery Console

Now boot into DVD Repair console, click through to Startup Repair to run up to 3 separate times to see if it can find an installation, and then make the necessary repairs.

If Win7 won't start, burn the HD maker's diag/repair CD scan, boot it to run Extended scan: HD Diagnostic, followed by Disk Check run from DVD Repair Tools Command Line.

Once the HD is cleared, run a free bootable AV scan to see if it finds and can clean up infection enough to repair Win7: FREE Bootable AntiVirus Rescue CDs Download List

If you are within a year of purchase, you have full warranty and tech support from Toshiba to help you with all of this. If not, you can attempt to run your Recovery Partition following these steps:

Using Toshiba HDD Recovery Utility from the recovery partition
In case of a hard disk drive failure, you may be able to restore the drive to the factory default state using the on-disk Toshiba HDD Recovery Utility (in a special partition on the hard disk drive).
You can select restoring the entire hard disk drive to the factory default state, or restoring only the C: drive -- without affecting other partitions (for example, a D: drive) -- or changing the size allocated to your C: drive, and then restore it.

To recover your hard disk drive from a system failure using the utilities stored on your computers HDD, follow these steps:
    1. If the computer is running, shut it down -- by clicking Start, Shut Down, and again Shut Down.
    2. Press and hold the 0 (zero) key on your keyboard and then press the computers power switch. When the computer turns on, the Toshiba HDD Recovery Utility screen will appear, presenting three options:

Sample TOSHIBA HDD Recovery Utility screen
    Restore Original Factory Image (Recommended)
    CAUTION:

Restoring a hard disk drive to its factory default state deletes all partitions on the hard disk drive and all data stored on those partitions. All of your files and information will be lost! Be sure to back up all important files first.
    1. Press 1 to restore your hard disk drive to its original factory default state. A confirmation message will appear, indicating that all data will be overwritten and lost during the restore process. Be sure to back up all important files before proceeding.
    2. Click Yes to begin the recovery. A message will appear once the operation is finished, indicating the HDD has been restored.
    3. Press any key to restart the computer.

Restore Partition C: of HDD without changing current partition size
    CAUTION:
Restoring the C: drive to its factory default state formats your drive. Your information on the drive will be overwritten, and lost. Be sure to back up all important files first. If you have created other partitions (for example, a D: drive) those partitions and any information on them will not be affected and will remain intact.
To restore only the C: drive:
    1. Press 2 to restore only the "C:" drive (the letter C is traditionally used to designate the first volume on the hard disk drive) on your computer. A confirmation message will appear, indicating that all information on the drive will be lost during the recovery process. Be sure to back up all important files before proceeding.
    2. Click Yes to begin the recovery. A message will appear once the operation is finished, indicating that the HDD has been restored.
    3. Press any key to restart the computer.
Restore Image to C: Partition with user specified size
    CAUTION:
Resizing and restoring your C: drive to its factory default state formats all partitions on the HDD (for example, if you created a D: drive, it will be deleted during the recovery process) your information will be overwritten, and lost. Be sure to back up all important files first.
To resize and restore your C: drive:
    1. Press 3 at the Toshiba HDD Recovery Utility screen. A confirmation message will appear, indicating that all partitions will be reformatted and all information will be lost during the recovery process. Be sure to back up all important files before proceeding.
    2. Click "Yes" to begin the recovery and to specify the size of the C: drive.
      • Press the Left/Right Arrow keys to increase/decrease the C: drive size by 1 GB increments.
      • Press the Up/Down Arrow keys to increase/decrease the C: drive size by 5 GB increments.

        NOTE:
The size of the C: drive will be displayed on the progress bar as you make your selections.
    3. Click "Enter" to begin the recovery. A message will appear once the operation is finished, indicating that the HDD has been restored.
    4. Press any key to restart the computer.
If Recovery partition will not run, you can order Recovery Disks or locate a Win7 installer for your version to clean reinstall using the Product Key on COA sticker following these steps to get a purrfect reinstall: re-install windows 7

Hello mavsynchroid, welcome to Seven Forums!

Here's another option, if you can find an exact Windows version that the PC shipped with you can do a clean install using the activation key on the COA sticker attached to the PC though it may require a robo-call to MS to sort the OEM batch-key.

How to Activate Windows 7 by Phone

If you can't find an exact same version, you could use the info in this tutorial to create an "all Versions" installer of any version Windows installer, to install using the same method I posted above and be sure to post back with any further questions you may have and to keep us informed.

Though if there's nothing on the PC you need to save, I'd do a complete wipe (secure erase) of the entire Hard Disk Drive first.

    hi,
i have a similar problem a couple days back i restarted my computer and i got a run32.dll error something to do with AVG then my laptop would crash. i tried going to safe mode to uninstall AVG hoping that, that would solve the problem, but it only made it worse when i restarted i got the welcome screen then a black screen then my laptop would restart.
i tried pressing f8 and try a system restore but an error popped up saying a file was missing or the restore point was deleted during the restore. Cant reinstall windows 7 because i can only go into safe mode!!

Some help would be much appreciated thx.
