    Uninstalling an OS

    Hey guys,

I have Windows 7 Ultimate dual booted with Ubuntu 10.04. I don't use Ubuntu too much, so I want to uninstall it to free up some space from my hard drive.

The last time I did this though, I couldn't boot into windows. How can I remove the Ubuntu partition while still being able to boot into Windows?

    Thanks!

Basically, you just need to delete the Ubuntu partition, then restore the bootmgr from Windows 7.

MBR - Restore Windows 7 Master Boot Record

Remove Grub - Restore Windows 7

I could be wrong, but I've uninstalled a different OS partition by booting from the OS install disc, accessing the individual partition screen and deleting ONLY that partition (as opposed to the drive with windows on it)

EDIT: Use the guide above by yowanvista, I forgot to include the bit about the master boot record :X

Mark Win7 partition Active in Disk Management.

    Download this bootsect.zip .

    Copy bootsect.exe file into c:\windows\system32.

Open an elevated command prompt and type (assuming Windows 7 partition sees itself as C):

    bootsect /nt60 C: /mbr

    press enter.

To avoid GRUB corruption, wipe the Ubuntu partition from Disk tab of free Partition Wizard bootable CD. Free Download Magic Partition Manager Software - Partition Wizard Online

To start a new thread, enter the General Forum and click New Thread button.

Unless it says the DVD includes 64 bit, then it's unlikely a single DVD installer has both 32- and 64-bit. Retail packages normally include both disks.

You are entitled to use either bit version with each license of Win7. If you don't have the 64 bit installer for your version, you can borrow it from a friend or otherwise locate it.

If you download from the web, be sure to check the comments from others who have done so and rightclick scan the finished ISO with your AV and Malwarebytes. To be extra sure I would also check the HASH against official HASH.

So I do all that, then get the ubuntu cd and delete the partition?

I would use free Partition Wizard bootable CD so you can do a partition-specific Wipe of the Ubuntu partition, to get rid of all traces of GRUB. GRUB can corrupt Win7 on the same HD, often making it irreparable.

Another method to do this is to wipe GRUB partition, mark Win7 partition active, then run Startup Repair from the Win7 DVD Repair console or Repair CD up to 3 separate times to repair the System MBR. Startup Repair - Run 3 Separate Times

Thanks Greengroker, for your prompt reply, I'll check out my Win7 packaging. In the interests of clarity do you want me to delete my Question on this thread as its slightly 'off topic'
