my windows crashed while installing ubuntu

    Hi guys,

I tried installing ubuntu on my HP pavilion dm4 today by dual booting it and keeping both windows 7 and ubuntu on the different partitions. I installed ubuntu 10.10 succesfully but the thing was when i am restarting the laptop..its asking me to choose the operating system but when i choose windows 7 it says to repair the system and to repair i should have a Windows 7 DVD. I got the system 10 days back and i had no back up of the system and i think my HP recovery was also crashed. I dont know what to do..Can anyone suggest me how to bring my WIndows back?

the good thing was ubuntu was working good and i am using it now...

A new HP will have recovery options available at bootup. I think it's usually F11, but you can look on the screen to see the correct button. This will allow you to start from scratch.

You can run startup repair from a neosmart disk.

What do you mean by the F11 not working? Does your screen tell you that F11 is the proper key for recovery options?

Hello ubuntuuser, welcome to Seven Forums! That's an appropriate handle.

You may need to start over, here's some interesting info you may find useful and be sure to post back with any further questions you may have and to keep us informed.

After you have copied out or made back-ups of the data you need to save to external media; if you can find an exact Windows version that the PC shipped with you can do a clean install using the activation key on the COA sticker attached to the PC though it may require a robo-call to MS to sort the OEM batch-key.

If you can't find an exact same version, you could use the info in this tutorial to create an "all Versions" installer of any version Windows installer, to install using the same method I posted above.

After you have made backups of everything you care to save, the best method is to do a complete wipe (secure erase) of the entire Hard Disk Drive first, it over-writes everything, all the old Windows code including all the old drivers/programs, giving you the best possible space to install Windows to.
