I've decided to upgrade from vista to win7 but during the installation, near the end after it's 3rd reboot it always freezes at 42% when it says that it's trying to importing my old settings from vista. I'm stuck at this point and need some help, thanks.

- Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 or SP2 -> Windows 7 Home Premium
- Windows Vista Business SP1 or SP2 -> Windows 7 Professional
- Windows Vista Ultimate SP1 or SP2 -> Windows 7 Ultimate

Personally, I don't advocate the use of an upgrade from a previous version of Windows. Instead, I always recommend a clean installation. If you have plenty of space, I suggest that you create a new partition and install W7 in that.

and your Win 7 is also Home Premium, not Ultimate?

problem is, that I have a lot of stuff. Movies, pictures (over a thousand), music etc. I don't have enough CDs to store my data on. It would be a lot easier for me to just upgrade. I have configured vista a lot to try to speed it up, so I'm guessing that could be part of the problem. If there really is no solution then my only choice then is to do a clean install.
Partition your disk, move everything you need to a separate partition from Windows. Then clean install Windows 7.
Never store important data on the Windows partition. If you do, be sure to back up the "Documents and Settings" and/or "Users" folders.
Your data are still available in Windows.old file after clean install. You dont need to format disk. Just some 16 G free space and make clean install.
I would still do a clean installation, as it is really the best way to ensure a stable system. You can then copy the necessary data over from Vista to W7. Although W7 is built on the fundamentals of Vista and can, in many cases where there isn't a specific W7 driver available use an equivalent Vista driver, it is still substantially different. It might well be possible to follow the upgrade path as described by Shawn (Brink), but in order to do that you really need an unadulterated installation of Vista. I note that you have made some tweaks to your Vista installation in order to speed it up, and it is possible that these are causing your W7 installation problems. You also need to remember that the current RC versions of W7 are the Ultimate editions, and, as such, are only officially supported as an upgrade from Vista Ultimate.
as long as you're 100% sure that my data will be kept after clean install then I'll try that. Space is no problem as I have an 500GB HD
