You cannot upgrade from XP to Windows7
    A Clean install is required
    Clean Install Windows 7

I read that but the first step says boot the computer from your Windows 7 installation DVD.
I can't get this to work

Make an iso image out of the DVD
Make a bootable installation USB stick and use it to install windows 7

after the option to load bios i get a black screen with flashing underscore, looks like pc is trying to load dvd (dvd drive light is flashing) but nothing actually loads and after 30 sec it just loads up xp as normal.
when i go to my computer it shows the dvd drive as normal but no files (as if nothing is actually in the drive, it is working though have tried other cds and a dvd)

not sure I can do this when the dvd is not recognized? don't i need to transfer the data from the dvd to the usb flashdrive?

    Hi,

Sorry this is an obvious question, but are you inserting a DVD into a CDROM drive? Or DVD into DVD drive?

    Regards,

it says DVD-RAM drive on 'my computer' and the front of the actual drive says 'dvd-RW'

I believe it is a SONY DVD RW AW-G170A

I've only got one drive so hopefully it's the right sort of one?

Hello BrutalLogiC, welcome to Seven Forums!

Just as a test, what happens if you insert the disk into the CD/DVD drive while in XP, does it do anything?

This dvd was burnt by you from an iso? Or its a pre-manufactured, labelled one?

Also check if theres a firmware update for that drive.
