Toshiba M500 WIndows 7 Setup

Dear all,

My current laptop come with Windows Vista OEM partition and System Recovery Partition.

I'm now plan to re-format the Operating System Partition and creat another partition for my data storage.

When I'm insert the Windows 7 Ultimate installation disk, the system will create a System Reserved Partition for me which unable for me to creat data storage partition due to more than 4 Partitions in one Hard disk.

Anyone could advice me how to install my Windows 7 Ultimate according to my plan?

The installer will not create the 100mb System Reserved partition if any partitions on the HD are saved.

If you will post back a screenshot of your full Disk Management drive map with listings, we can advise you the best course for repartitioning an OS and data partition, if you really want to save the Vista recovery and OEM partition.

Be aware that the link to the Recovery and OEM partition will likely be lost, even to run Recovery from boot. SO it may be best to make your Recovery disks now and wipe the entire HD to get the cleanest install.

WIndows 7 Ultimate 64 bit

That's mean the Windows Vista OEM and System Recovery partition in the HD is useless after we've install a new operating system(e.g. Windows 7)?

The installer will not create the 100mb System Reserved partition if any partitions on the HD are saved.

Now I planned to re-format the operating systems partition ehich previously using by windows vista, when I start to install the windows 7 after re-format the operating partition, the windows prompted the message needed to install the 100mb system reserved partition. Should I select YES or NO?

The Disk Management drive map structure of my HD now is as follow:-

Front portion: Windows Vista OEM (1.5Gb)
Middile Portion: for Windows Vista Operating System
End Portion: System Recovery (12Gb)

Sorry can take a screenshot due to the Laptop is not with me now.

There is a possibility that the Vista Recovery Partition will run from boot using the hotkey given to run Factory Recovery, but if it is located on the F8 Advanced Boot Tools menu it will be removed and therefore unavailable.

Have you made the Recovery Disks?

You can use the booted Win7 DVD Custom>Drive options to delete the partitions, and create new. I would accept the 100mb System Reserved partition when offered as it places the Repair console on F8 Advanced Boot Tools menu. All of this is explained in the Clean Reinstall tips I linked if you would read those.

If you're going to get rid of those partitions then you really should wipe the HD to get the cleanest possible install using DIskpart Clean All command from the installer Command Line: SSD / HDD : Optimize for Windows Reinstallation

When Diskpart completes close the Command Box and click Install Now, use Custom>Drive Tools to create your partition(s) then format before installing to first OS partition. Pictures here: Clean Install Windows 7

If you have an Upgrade version then leave the Product Key blank during install, after install do the quick Registry workaround given here to activate when installing Upgrade version to a cleaned HD: Clean Install with a Upgrade Windows 7 Version

WIndows 7 Ultimate 64 bit

That's mean you suggested me to clear all the partition in HD including the Windows Vista OEM and System Recovery partition?

Is it the new installed windows 7 able to creat the OEM and recovery partition juas as windows vista doing before?

Please answer the question: Have you made your Vista Recovery Disks?

If you haven't made your Recovery Disks, please make them now following these steps to use Toshiba Recovery utility:

If you clean install Win7, it will wipe away all of the pre-installed software and factory utilities which came with your computer.

If you want to keep those then you need to do an in-place Upgrade by running the installer from Vista. Upgrade Install with Windows 7

If you delete all partitions and clean install, you will also have to reinstall your files and programs.

Win7 does not create an OEM and Recovery partition. You can instead save externally a Win7 backup image which will allow you to restore your Win7: Backup Complete Computer - Create an Image Backup
