Windows 7 Home Premium with Windows Virtual PC & Win

I'm currently running Vista Premium and just per-ordered Windows 7 Premium. I notice that Microsoft only offers the XP Mode in their professional, Ultimate and Enterprise versions. Once I upgrade to Windows7 will I be able to download and manually install Virtual PC and XP mode and have it work in my Premium version? Yes my AMD BIOS supports it. Thank you!

Hello leelord and welcome to the Se7enforums!

The one thing to know about the Virtual PC beta and the new XP mode is the system requirements from the start.
    System Requirements

    • Supported Operating Systems: Windows 7

    • Windows 7 Professional, Windows 7 Ultimate, or Windows 7 Enterprise.

    • Hard disk requirement: 2GB for installing Windows XP Mode. Addtional 15GB of hard disk space for the virtual Windows environment.

Unfortunately the Home Premium isn't upto gear for the Virtualization process featured in the higher priced editions. This is one reason why those are higher priced to start with having additional features and more support for other things included in them. And that's definitely one reason why I'm not settling for less then the Ultimate edition once 7 is out!

Thanks so much for the info. I'll think about Ultimate but was leaning toward Professional because of the price difference. BTW I'm currently running Vista Premium 64 bit with alot of XP 32 bit software without any problems. IF I were to stick with 7 Home Premium would I have much of a problem with that 32 bit software? I'm assuming, and don't know if I'm correct, that XP Mode is more for people upgrading from XP to Windows 7? Thanks again! Lee

You wouldn't believe the old stuff 98-XP I have running on the 64bit RC! Some things like a list of desktop programs will still need to see an updated Vista compatible version of the software if written for XP alone. That always proves to be the case when any new version of Windows came out in past tense.

Try running an old 98-XP compatible pc game for example or even finding out certain XP 32bit device drivers(addon like tv tuner card) can work on the 64bit 7 in some cases. Up until lately XP was needed for one old dvd burning program having been included with an old capture card. I simply downloaded the updated shareware still being a 32bit app to find that works well on the 64bit RC!

One of the main reasons MS developed the XP mode is not for running older games but in too many cases businesses still need to run their currect XP softwares! The XP mode being the Pro edition easily supports the old softwares while you are still running the latest version of Windows by way of the virtual machine.

One of the old but still seen complaints about going with the next version of Windows released has always been the need to go out and buy all the latest newer versions of the softwares(mainly desktop apps like Office and word processing) just when everything is all set on the current version being run. Not everyone went with XP either. Some are still running 2000 while others leaped over XP for Vista!

Thanks so much for all the info. I've decided to go with Pro, just to be safe, although all my 32bit programs run well in my 64bit Vista Premium OS. I'm just curious if my MS Office 2003 would have been compatible if I had ordered Windows7 Premium? Thanks again! Lee

The Office 2003 requirements are 2000, XP and later. If anything you can try running it in the XP SP2 compatibility mode if you don't upgrade to Office 2007. With 2003 on the 64bit Vista you shouldn't see any problems with it on the 64bit 7 HP or Pro when out.

If you have the drive space or an extra drive often better you could try the 64bit 7 RC to get familiar with what will run on there while waiting. Most things seem to go right on while I have a few programs that will still need the updated versions. That's typical of any new version of Windows however.

Thanks again for the information. I already pre-ordered 7Pro. Hopefully Office 2003 will run without problems in it.

I'm debating whether or not to install 7 RC. I have an external drive but I don't think I can install on that? If I install over Vista Premium I assume that means I would have to uninstall RC or do a clean install with the real deal 7 upgrade?

Another thought, what I had originally planned to do was put my Vista OS back to factory settings, then install Windows 7 Pro over it. What do do....... thanks again Lee

At the present a second partition or drive even(MS advises) would allow you to set up a dual boot of 7 along with Vista. Dual Boot Installation with Windows 7 and Vista

You could even try an upgrade install provided both are 64bit. Upgrade Install with Windows 7

Thanks again for all your information, you've been a big help! I already pre-ordered 7 Pro. Currently I'm running Vista Home Premium but I ran across this information below: ....I'm assuming, according to this, that I can NOT upgrade from Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Pro? Only 7 Premium and Ultimate. Should I change my order back to Windows 7 Home Premium if I want to do an upgrade? I hate to do a Win7 Pro clean install because of all my drivers. Thanks again, LEE

Supported Upgrade Paths to Window 7 Without doing a Clean Install:

Windows Vista Home Basic (SP1, SP2) to Windows 7 Home Basic, Home Premium and Ultimate
    • Windows Vista Home Premium (SP1, SP2) to Windows 7 Home Premium and Ultimate
    • Windows Vista Business (SP1, SP2) to Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise and Ultimate
    • Windows Vista Enterprise (SP1, SP2) to Windows 7 Enterprise
    • Windows Vista Ultimate (SP1, SP2) to Windows 7 Ultimate

Based on that alone you would need to change things from Pro to Home Premium if that is what will turn out to be the case. As far as drivers you can backup downloads of updates prior to any clean install simply to have onhand.

I have two 1tb storage drives in at this time for backing up XP as well as Vista and 7 updates(the few now available) while XP is no longer simply for some old XP clunkers that need to be refurbished here. For each old case I simply use a 32gb flash for transfer of board, video, sound drivers once downloaded for each onto the main build presently running 7 with Vista on the Virtual PC option.

That's another thing to look at once you have 7 if you have any interest in running the new XP mode or Vista on the VPC. Your cpu has to support virtualization for that option to work. The first thing you will need to check out is the virtualization compatibilty check with the Intel or AMD tool found at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/vir...gure-bios.aspx

Just for reference at this time you would then need to go for the VPC still beta for the time being at Download details: Windows Virtual PC Beta

That has to go on first by simply double clicking on the mui file followed by the download of the XP mode itself from Download details: Windows XP Mode Beta

Once those are final the actual pages for download may change as well. I'm going to load you up a bit more with a working guide to show you how that is installed and run. Windows XP Mode - Install and Setup

The two screens here show how the XP mode first and Vista on the VPC second look. Note that both have all the latest Windows updates on with Vista seeing SP2 there.
