    CD/DVD driver missing with Win 7 RC1

I am trying to install Windows 7 RC1 (build 7100) and get a message that "A required CD/DVD drive device driver is missing" while trying to install either 32-bit or 64-bit versions. ISO downloads have the correct MD5 checksums.

Computer is Asus P5W DH Deluxe. CD/DVD drive is a Samsung SH-S183L (SATA) connected to the JMicron JMB36X onboard SATA controller. Unfortunately, I don't have any other available SATA ports so cannot easily try switching the controller being used.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Hi Guy, and Welcome to the W7 forums.

This problem seems to be caused by a bad download/burn of w7.

Try burning the ISO again at a aslower speed and reinstall.

basically the setup file is saying it cant read the dvd player because its driver is missing. first step (if you still have internet) is to update the driver for the samsung, and the jmicron.

Let us know if that doesnt help

Scott, both 32-bit and 64-bit fail with the same message, and the 32-bit DVD works successfully on another computer. Also, the MD5 checksum matches, so I don't think it's either a download or DVD problem.

Ken, thanks, but I can't get beyond "setup starting" in the install process. The setup process has been booted and is running from the very DVD it says it can't read.

Are you suggesting I update the driver on the install DVD? I'm not sure how to do that.

    Thanks.

Did you boot from that disk or started within a system that already insalled?
Have you got a working system on your machine? Does it handel your drive well?

Yes, I booted from the install DVD. The DVD drive works well with any operating system I've run (XP Pro, 2003 SBS). And, yes, there is a working XP Pro system on the computer, but I doubt that matters as I've booted the DVD to begin a clean install.

That is starnge. I don't know why it does that.
Why don't you install it from a partition of your hard drive? I know it is not a solution for your question, but may be it helps.

Funny how this thread is flowing on July 2, 1 day after the official expiration. I thought I had the silly OS patched against rebooting, and I know its frowned upon, but I like to do things on my own time. I bought ME, XP, XP+SP2, Vista, and pre-purchased 7. Nonetheless, I too was plagued with the "required CD/DVD drive device driver is missing" messages, even though whatever I tried browsing to wasn't what it was looking for.

Then I found a thread on a technet site and someone there asked what kind of DVD drive it was. I completely forgot that I had replaced my DVD with a SATA after I installed Windows 7 Beta Build 7000. I will attempt the install using an IDE DVD once I get home tonight, then I will attempt this speed install method and edit this message with my findings.

covale I could be wrong here, but maybe there is a compatability option in the BIOS to make the SATA DVD Drive compatable with IDE, this is true for some laptops that use SATA HDD, worth a check in the BIOS settings I think.

Windows XP and SBS 2003 both install flawlessly using this SATA DVD drive on my system. It's Windows 7 RC-1 that won't install. When I see behavior like that, I think "regression."

EDIT: I just tested build 7264 and had the same problem.
