    Install windows 7,over Ubuntu

Hi,I friend just got a new laptop.
From thw store where he bought it,the OS of the laptop was an Ubuntu.
I tried to install windows 7,but won't let me.
I can't access "Format" from the installation process.
Down on the windows that is opened when installing windows 7,it says "Windows 7 cannot be installed on this partition because the format is not NTFS,and is not enough space on the disk"
The laptop got only 2 partitions 0 and 1,and both of them are out of free space.
    Thanks.
    The laptop is Acer.

Hello, here's some more information about the wipe process and be sure to post back with any further questions you may have and to keep us informed.

After you have copied out or made back-ups of the data you need to save to external media, use Step One of this tutorial at the link below to do a wipe (secure erase) to the entire Hard Disk Drive / Solid State Drive.
    • Then if you do not want to create the new Windows 7 "System Reserved" partition use the outline in Step Two #2 to create, format and mark Active a single 100GB partition to do the installation to.
    • If you do want to create the "System Reserved" partition use the outline in Step Two #3 to create, format and mark Active the System Reserved partition and then create and format the 100GB partition to do the installation to.
Either way, running the "clean all" then creating and formatting the partition(s) using diskpart will get you the best possible space to do a clean install of Windows 7 to; you can always extend the Windows partition to include the remaining unallocated space on the HDD / SSD or create additional Primary partitions or an Extended partition after the installation completes if you choose.

During the install process, Select the advanced disk formatting right near the start of the install (I'm sorry I forget the exact term). In there you should be able to list the installed disk and it'll show the partitions. Delete all the current partitions on the disk. Then there wil be enough room to create a new windows partition and format it for install :)

Okok, thank you all for the responses. I'll try the next stps, please tell me if it will work.
After I boot up from the cd/dvd ,select the language, clock etc, when I get the partition screens.
    I select advance options,
Delet one of the partition, and try to create a new one,not to mess everything up.
And if it work I'll try the same thing with the mext partition.
    Will it be good?

If you want to have nothing but windows on the disk, delete ALL the partitions, then create one new one covering the full disk. Of course if you like having a system and data partitions seperately then go for that :)

All Linux code must be deleted. As you have had linux on the HD you need do a Clean all & full format.

Disk - Clean and Clean All with Diskpart Command
    Partition or Volume - Delete
Partition or Volume - Create New
    Partition - Mark as Active

Do a full clean & full format in command prompt.

    1) Boot DVD & Press Shift+F10 (for command prompt)
    DISKPART : At PC Startup

    2) Boot DVD, & Command Prompt at Startup
    (for command prompt)

    Type in command line
    DISKPART
    LIST DISK
    SELECT DISK # (win HD)
    CLEAN ALL
    CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY
    SELECT PARTITION 1
    ACTIVE
    FORMAT fs=NTFS
    ASSIGN
    EXIT
    EXIT

You've now had three separate posts advising to wipe the HD with Diskpart Clean All, since having the Ubuntu boot manager GRUB on the HD can corrupt Win7 until it is wiped from the HD.

    Have you gotten the message?
