Installation on a Sony Vaio fails

Hello everyone!

My sister asked me to install her newly acquired copy of Windows 7 in her Sony Vaio, I formatted his Vista and then procceeded to install it, but then an error appeared every time on the second step, telling me rollback.exe was creating an application error and it would take me back to the "install now" screen.

I'd have to call my sister for more information so that's why my post may lack some, but I'm feeling bad cause now she can't even use her computer and I feel it's my fault since i convinced her to switch :/

I somehow guess it fails because those computers are pre-configured to work with certain setups only, but I'm not really sure and don't even know how to check it.

Hopefuly you guys know why this is caused and how to solve it, thanks!

It sounds like a failing in-place Upgrade, but since you said you formatted the HD before install it may be that the HD needs wiping before clean install. SSD / HDD : Optimize for Windows Reinstallation

Exactly how was it formatted? How is the installer being run now?

Where did you get Win7? Did you burn the DVD yourself?

It would be best to get the person actually trying the install into the thread here so we can walk them through troubleshooting steps. There is nothing to fear. It is a great learning experience with methods that have been used successfully hundreds of times.

fresh install of windows 7 lead to bsod on a 2 year old sony vaio

Hey form fans i got a small problem with my sister sony vaio and that is she got a large amount of virus and i decided instead of trying to clean them up to just simple format and re-install windows 7 ultimate x64 now first problem was that the vaio would not read the windows 7 dvd i am using so i figure a simple way around that would be to just remove the hdd place it in my hp laptop use the dvd format the hdd install windows and then insert it back into the vaio and let it recognize the hdd and update the bios driver as it seems fit to so i have done these same step on different labtop both running ether a x32 or x64 platform my problem is after doing this when i place the hdd in the vaio (which just to clarify is the original hdd with nothing wrong with it) it start up windows logo appears but before the four little swilling orbs that make the logo come to place it go to blue screen of death for like 2-3 seconds and then tries to restart and i have tried all other options please help me as i promised my sister i would fix this for her as i have done before on differ comp and labtop

You can't swap HDDs between computers, especially different brands. Windows is expecting to see different hardware, so you get a BSOD as you have found.

Where did you get the Win7 DVD? Is it for the same Win7 version that came with the PC, and is the Product Key readable on the COA sticker on bottom of laptop?

Read over the steps for doing a Clean Reinstall Windows 7 as you may need to confirm the disk or burn a new one.

If you installed using a disk that didn't need activating with a Product Key then it's an illegal bootleg copy which we don't support here.

Doesn't the PC come with a COA sticker on the bottom saying the licensed version with a readable Product Key you can use to activate it legally? If so then follow Clean Reinstall Windows 7

If not then you'll need to order Recovery DIsks from the manufacturer and afterwards Clean Up Factory Bloatware
