    Where is setup log?

I am attempting to install Win 7 64-bit on a system with XP Pro 32-bit installed. I created a new primary partition for Win7 and started the install. After selecting the partition, the setup process reports that it cannot install on that partition and that I should see the setup log file for more information.

Where is this file? It's not on my target partition (drive L:), nor do I see it in the root of the C:\ partition. Does it exist somewhere, or how do I figure out what the problem is?

Is it permitted to install 64-bit Win 7 as a dual boot to Win XP Pro 32-bit?

    Thanks.

The install files are located as below

    $windows.~bt\Sources\Panther
Log location before Setup can access the drive.

    $windows.~bt\Sources\Rollback
Log location when Setup rolls back in the event of a fatal error.

    %WINDIR%\Panther
Log location of Setup actions after disk configuration.

    %WINDIR%\Inf\Setupapi*.log
Used to log Plug and Play device installations.

    %WINDIR%\Memory.dmp
Location of memory dump from bug checks.

    %WINDIR%\Minidump\*.dmp
Location of log minidumps from bug checks.

    %WINDIR%\System32\Sysprep\Panther
    Location of Sysprep logs.

Can you see any files in the new partition from Windows XP after you tried to install Windows 7?

Nope, there's nothing in the partition at all besides the usual System Volume Information folder. I looked, and didn't see any logs there either.

If your install is not getting that far then the logs files will be in the Windows Preinstallation Environment (Windows PE). X: drive. Press Shift+F10 (to get a command prompt) when you get the error message and have a look for them on X: drive. Hope that helps.

I solved the problem. I had created and "formatted" the drive in Win 7 Setup. The "format" process was exceedingly fast; is it a Quick Format?

I booted XP and did a full format from Disk Management for the partition where I was trying to install Win 7. After the full format I was able to install Win 7.

Cool. Nice to hear you got it sorted. Strange the format in Win7 didn't work.
