MBR issues and questions - how to wipe it?

I had windows 7 32 bit installed on a system, it was installed to an IDE drive. This system also had a SATA drive used for storage.

I'm now trying to wipe the SATA drive and use it as the main drive in a new system (64 bit windows 7).

Even after running western digital's low level format utility, the disk type is still reported in disk management as 'master boot record (MBR)'. I've deleted all the logical drives and partitions, and it reports the full size as unallocated space.

Windows 7 will no longer boot off the IDE drive either, it can't find the boot manager. I think I can handle that with a repair install, but what I'm most concerned about now is how to completely wipe the SATA drive so I can do a clean install on my new system without any residual stuff on the drive (MBR or otherwise).

I'm a bit out of my depth as far as understanding the intricacies of the MBR and how it works, so I'd really appreciate any advice on how to wipe this SATA drive completely. I'm a bit hesitant to start downloading freeware tools on my own.

thanks very much for any help.

You're agonizing unnecessarily ...

When you boot from the Win7 DVD and install it to the SATA drive (make sure the IDE drive is NOT connected at the time), it will overwrite the drive's MBR as part of the installation. So, you don't have to worry about wiping the MBR -- it will get replaced.

Win7 x64 Screensaver Questions/Issues. No 'Stretching'?
Couple of questions for the experts here.... Windows XP's Screensaver had some very nice touches that do not seem to be replicable under Windows 7. If one had a photo selection, under XP that set could be used as a slideshow for screensaver, and the images would be cycled in a 'corner to corner'...
