situation - xp pro (machine A) to Win & (machine B)

I want to know whether a Standard edition upgrade will work.

I have an old desktop Dell w/ XP PRO installed therefore with an OEM license version.

I'd like to move the applications and data to a new machine (a virtual machine) with Windows 7 Home Premium.

Will the standard upgrade edition path succeed (XP PRO to Win 7 Home Premium) using Windows Easy Transfer?

    Thanks, Mike

You cannot transfer your XP programs to another machine - they must be reinstalled. Your data can be copied over - easiest is to copy the named User account folder or the active User sub-folders (Documents, etc) to DVD, flash stick, external USB or over the network into the new install.

Since XP is factory preinstalled OEM tied to the Dell, it would not qualify you for use of Win7 Upgrade version on another machine. You would need another XP/Vista retail license to qualify for the second machine, or you can use the Upgrade on the Dell.

If transfering from Win XP, download the update WET from here:
Download details: Windows Easy Transfer for transferring from Windows XP (32 bit) to Windows 7

Warning do not use the old Win XP Easy Transfer, will not work with Vista or Windowds 7.

Thanks for the replies. It appears that as long as I only have the OEM version I cannot upgrade to another machine but only on the existing machine (which is now obsolete thus the license dies with it).

I'm trying to find someone who is willing to part with XP Pro a retail license. I only need to run one windows program under a virtual machine.

Have you tried installing and troubleshooting the XP program in Win7 Compatibility Mode?

No I wasn't aware of it. I may have run it on my old Dell laptop months ago but that machine was 8-9 yrs old (great machine though).

I gave up on Win 7 and got a XP PRO from a private party.

Thx for the idea though. Mike
