It will ask for a serial but since none have been released yet by MS, you can't put in a serial and activate it, legally at least, at this time. But you can still install it and run it unactivated for 30 days (trial mode) and then "re-arm" three more times for a total of 120 days. By then, you will be able to obtain a legal key from MS.

it will ask you for a product key during installation however you can check the box 'automatically activate windows online' and click Next to continue installing 7.

You should uncheck the box about automatically activating online because you are not inserting a key at this time. You can activate manually later on down the road when you are able to obtain a proper key.

Hi harpua, your post seems misleading. If he will uncheck that option, he will have to enter a product key to proceed. Hence he needs to check the option to activate windows online so that he can skip the product key screen and continue the installation .

Not correct, sorry. I just installed it with the box unchecked and no key yesterday. Installed fine. Running now unactivated (running great, btw), waiting for my key (and final RTM) from Technet.

When you enter a key and check the box, it will use the key to automatically activate without your having to do anything further. If you enter a key and DON'T check the box, it will store the key but not activate automatically. It will allow you to manually activate at a time of your choosing.

If you do not enter a key and proceed with the box unchecked, it will install fine and allow you activate manually when you have a key.

I'm not sure what will happen if you don't enter a key and check the box. Perhaps it will proceed and ignore the check, but it CAN'T possibly activate automatically online because you haven't entered a key.

The box is about activating automatically online. My understanding is that leaving the box unchecked will still allow manual activation online at some point in the future when one is ready to manually enter a key.

If you make the mistake to uncheck automatically activate windows online, do what I did, under the product key, type in 00000-00000-00000-00000-00000 and hit next. That should take care of the product key as the zeros mean you're using a trial version.
