Installing on C: SSD and User Data on D:

As SSDs are undoubtedly the way to go for the OS and booting, I am curious how one can configure Windows 7 to install on C: yet save all user data on D: (which is where the 2TB drive is). The main reason being the space is limited on C (SSD is only 90GB) and the media structure of the user library with videos, documents, etc can easily span hundreds of gigs.

Is the only way to do this to manually change the user location to D:? If so, how is this done?

I'll be building a number of systems soon and want to have some sort of C: boot D: user data standard which falls within the management of the traditional Windows 7 Library structure.

    Thanks!

Here is a Tutorial to do this.
Follow closely, seems complex, but read it a few times before proceeding and all will be well.:)

    Hello Moofy,

That would be the perfect situation for libraries. You could just create separate folders on the D: drive for videos, documents, etc. Afterwards, include these folders to the appropriate (same type) library, and set these folders to be the default Save To folder for each library.

This way anything you save in the library will actually be saved in the folder on the D: drive, but still be able to access the files from within Libraries.

Plus, libraries make it easier to share the files in a homegroup if you like.

    Hope this helps,
    Shawn

Does 7 on C:, data on D: preserve account password protection?

    Great thread --

One question; I assume (unless told otherwise by someone here) that having the MS 7 Home Premium OS installed on C: and user accounts on D: as outlined above, still preserves the (modest) protection offered by passwords on each account?

I have a home business computer with 5 accounts on it to keep me, wife, guests and kids all in separate accounts, to reduce odds of User A messing up User B's data, accidentally or not.

I've seen other ways of doing this (7 on C:, data on D:) that permitted (from any account) going to the root of the D; drive, and easily entering user folders at that point, without need of user passwords for the other accounts...
