    Repair Install Question

I think I may have to do a repair install. I have read Brinks tutorial but have gotten a littl confused. I have an OEM MS windows 7 Pro disc. In the tutorial it says this will not work for a repair install, also regarding win 7 SP1 does this need to be uninstalled? And will I lose any of the programmes, data etc that is on the hard drive. And the OEM disc I have is the one I used to install the OS on this same machine

    1) There are different kinds of OEM disks- one the factory restore disk which comes with the oem computer or which you can create using the built in recovery software. This is just an image of the factory partition on your hard disk. Two, a OS-only reinstallation disk that used to be supplied earlier by oem's like dell (and still is by fujitsu). Three, a readymade oem win7 disk that you buy from a store.

The first type cannot be used for a repair install, the second may or may not work depending on how the oem has configured it, the third will work. So, if you have either of the first 2 types you may need to get hold of a generic disk.

    2) If you have installed sp1, you need a sp1 integrated win7 disk to run a repair install. A disk without sp1 or one with sp1 slipstreamed will not work. Or you need to uninstall sp1 first.

You'll need to download the Windows recovery software, and then burn it to a blank disc to create a Wiindows Repair Disk.

This disc won't re-install Windows, but it will get you into the Recovery Environment, from where you have several options.

Carrying out a repair will not lose any personal data. If, however, you do a system restore to a certain point in the past, you may have to re-install an update or application depending on what you installed between your selected restore point and the present time.

A repair install is not the same as system repair options. To carry out a repair install you need a proper win7 install disk, the system repair disk you're talking about cannot do a repair install.

    One more question
In the tutorial it says it will check for and install any updates. Does this mean it will want to reinstall sp1? and if so do I have the option not to check for updates and will this bugger up the repair install if I don't

You can uncheck the box "Go online to check for latest updates..." in step 6 and install all updates after install is complete.
