Cannot boot from cd to reinstall

So its not really windows 7, but I always get the best help from you guys so I figure I'll ask here anyway. A friend has asked me to set up a really old computer, a dell dimension 4300s. It was originally running windows xp, and that has been completely screwed up. It blue screens withing 10 seconds of booting normally or safe mode. I tried to reinstall xp with an original disk, but the computer refuses to boot from CD. Any suggestions on how to get it to boot so I can reinstall?

It should be F12 to get into setup once you see the BIOS screen, from there choose boot from CD rather than Hard drive

Sorry. I forgot to mention I know a bit about computers. I went into bios and set the cd drive first, and it still went straight to the hdd. So, I pressed f12, and it gets an error trying to boot from cd.

Before install I would
Check the hard drive with the manufacturer's diagnostic tools.

I'm thinking it might be an issue in the bios, as we have a cd burner and a dvd reader, neither of which work. That, or both drives are dirty/busted.

May be the IDE port or controller.

I finally got tired of screwing around with it and just plugged the hard drive into an external enclosure. I then installed the OS on it through another computer, and then put it back in. Everything is working fine now.

Hi guys, I know I'm probably just doing something stupid, but I recently had to reinstall Windows 7 in my dual boot system. Windows 8.1 can no longer "see" Win 7 and won't dual boot with it. I tried EasyBCD and all it did was corrupt Win 8.1's Bootmgr to the point where I had to use Automatic...

No boot, no safe mode, no reinstall? Win 7
A friend phoned saying her laptop wouldn't boot and I've done my fair share of recovery so said I'd have a look. I'm stuck though - as a newish Dell Inspiron I can't get the drive out without basically stripping the machine down to a bare shell, and I can't get it to boot into Windows, or into safe...

Windows won't boot, even after reinstall
A couple weekends ago when I was using my laptop, I fell asleep and awoke to find that it had turned itself off. I rebooted it to find that after the BIOS screen, nothing happened: I just got a blank screen with a cursor. I have seen this thread but unlike the fellow there, I had no problems at...
