    Windows 7 64 bit

Hi. I am trying to upgrade to Windows 7 64 bit from Vista 32 bit. I have a capable processor and 3gb of ram (although I have another gb in the post). When I run the installation everything is fine up untill a point. I think its at the point where the first boot up should occur. After the restart the windows 7 logo comes up then after that the screen stays black and I have a cursor for the mouse. Installation does not go beyond this point. Could this be because I dont have 4gb of RAM? Is it essential to have at least 4gb of RAM to run a 64 bit system?

try backing up your data on an external harddrive or flash drive. restart your computer and boot from the windows 7 64-bit disc. and then install

Have you got the retail version of Vista? If so, you may have two discs: one will be the 32-bit version, the other will be the 64-bit version.

If you only have the 32-bit version, you need to follow theog's advice.

Without cleaning the HD it will play up.

The hang at animation screen can be drivers loading failure. Try entering Device Manager during install using this method to uninstall any Devices in error (likely the Display) until it starts to the desktop when you can install or Update the driver.

Other tips for perfect install - use the ones which apply: Reinstalling Windows 7

If this fails, try wiping the HD from DVD command line: SSD - HDD Optimize for Windows Reinstallation

Next reset the CMOS: Clear CMOS - 3 Ways to Clear the CMOS - Reset BIOS

While in BIOS setup set SATA controller to AHCI. Unplug all HD's and periperhals.

You may need to try install with only 2gb of RAM.

I would reconsider 64 bit with only 3gb of RAM - I consider 4gb to be the dividing line 32/64. If you try 32 bit first, you can also try an in-place Upgrade.
