Can I repair install Windows 7 Home from a Windows 7 Professional DVD?

    Hi,

I have a Dell laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium on it. Recently I shut it down incorrectly and now windows is all screwed up. I'd like to do a repair install but all I have is a Windows 7 Professional DVD. I remember a while back I was able to install onther versions of Windows XP from an XP professional disc. Can I do the same with my Windows 7 DVD? If so how?

    Thanks in advance!

If WIn7 will start, you can run a Repair Install from the desktop by extracting the ISO image file from the DVD using ImgBurn, then Unlock any version with eicfg removal tool, burn an all-versions DVD to select Home Premium during repair install.

If Win7 will not start, Boot the Win7 DVD you have, on second screen select Repair my Computer, see if it finds an installation to repair. If so, accept any offered Repair, or click through to Recovery Tools list to run Startup Repair repeatedly. Report back results.

Startup Repair should automate System Restore, but run it manually from the list anyway. Then run SFC -SCANNOW Run in Command Prompt at Boot from Repair Command line, followed by Disk Check. Run these from DVD/Repair CD even if Win7 will start so they do not depend upon possibly corrupt System Files.

If these repairs fail you can copy out your files using DVD/Repair CD: Copy & Paste - in Windows Recovery Console or Paragon Rescue CD freeware.

Then run Dell factory Recovery from it's partition at boot or Recovery DIsks if you made them: Dell Restoring Your Computer´s Software to the Factory Settings

Or unlock Home Premium in the Pro DVD and clean reinstall using the Product Key on the COA sticker, following the steps given here: Reinstalling Windows 7

Hello NewGeek01, welcome to Seven Forums!

Have a look at these tutorials to create an "All Versions" installer using the installation DVD you have, that you can use to do what you need and be sure to post back with any further questions you may have and to keep us informed.
