Windows 7: creating an "answer " file for OS re-install

09 Jul 2011   #11

Windows 7 x64 pro/ Windows 7 x86 Pro/ XP SP3 x86

If you call me Sir, I wont answer any more questions.

OK, I'm not sure why IE9 flags the bios and chipset drivers but personally I've never had problems with dell stuff. You can scan both these and also your computer with malwarebytes to be safe.

XP versus win7 is a very tough question to answer. Some questions you need to ask yourselves:

Is this is a non-corporate computer/set of computers which does not need to run legacy (as in old 16 bit) hardware/software, propreitary apps?

Does this computer meet hardware requirements for win7?

Is this computer going to be used for several more years? MS support for XP ends in 2014 or thereabouts.

Are there many users who'll need to be trained on win7?

Thanks for the reply!
I do want help so I will not use the "sir" response as I am still having issues with a clean install on my last laptop.
I have tried a clean install using the supplied disk that shipped with my system, tried it with using the updated drivers from the support website and still I end up with an item listed in device manager with a yellow astrick.
It lists an item as "other device" - network controller and I have tried several times to install the broadcom network driver and such to no avail.
I have a studio 1555 laptop that dell support had to manually install the driver through device manager by going to the system section of the listing, selecting an item and updating the driver manually. It seems that I might have to do this for this item but am not experienced enough to know what item it references and then what needs to be done to correct it.
Please see attached...
Is there another location I should be posting for this type of help? I am new to forums and am not quite up to speed on formalities and don't want to upset or cause problems, so that being said.....
Thank-you to all for the help

I found that my Intel wireless failed to install. Running it again solved my issue. I now have ALL my systems back online and up to date. I am ever so thankfull for all the support from you in the know as I could never have done all this by myself.
The only other question that I have now - I am using Microsoft's Security Essentials, Zone Alarm's firewall (free edition) and use Malware bytes antimalware and am wondering if this setup uses or is contradicted and not compatable with each other. I am trying to cover the bases and am not sure what to use together and or what is compatable to have together on the system.
Thanks again

Default "Browse for file" location in web browser "choose file" box
Hi, how can I change this? Some background - this may not be the issue I need to solve at the end of the day: I believe the location is causing crashes, since I blew up lots of Library registry values (in an attempt to remove them from the OS), and I think it defaults to the library page....
