Win 7 64 bit Upgrade Activation problem

Hi, I had a problem with a virus on my Win 7 Home 32bit pc and went for the reformat and a fresh install via the custom option, and at the same time I upgraded to a an i5 processor and mobo which meant going to th 64bit version.
But when I came to activate the install on line I got a message that the key is for an upgrade not a new install.
I used the same custom install process to go from XP to 7 32bit with out a problem.
So other than paying out for a new key can anybody offer any suggestions what to do now?
