    Can I copy a recovered win7 OS over a fresh install ?

So here is the most challenging thing Ive come across in my IT travels.

Unfortunately its on my own system...

Today I restarted my main audio machine and the C drive wont boot

Turns out the pcb on the drive has a burn mark...

So by luck there is a identical drive in the same machine bought on the same day

I unscrewed the pcb from the working drive and gave it a shot and to my surprise my data recovery software - file scavenger was able to recover all the files and folders in their native file structure....

I want to now move them to the new drive and have it boot up into that system...

I was wondering if I install a fresh os win7 64 on to the new drive and pull that drive out of the machine and put it on the chain of the other computer that has the rescued files on it. Can I then copy the rescued files to the drive with the freshly installed win7 64 on it and over write the files with my old systems files?

After doing that and returning the drive to my old system will the old system boot up? Is there any tricks anyone can suggest short of re installing everything. I have a shitload of 3rd party plug ins which would take months to re instal... Not to mention my dsp audio card drivers and host environment, utils and the list goes on... If i can get this up and running I swear I will make a backup image and will never be in the same situation again...

As you have the rig up & running. Image the drive, & Recover to the new dive.

The rig is not up and running, I had to recover the files from the drive they all now exsist in a folder on a external drive not on a drive I can image the os from.

It recovered data has all the windows directories and files but not any partitions...

If you're able to browse into the HD to see the data intact with the Win7 DVD or Repair CD (see link just above) then you might be able to create a System image using Win7 built-in imaging (linked above), free Macrium Reflect, Paragon 11, or Acronis's premium cloning/imaging suite which comes free with any WD or Seagate HD in the mix.

You can also try repairing the HD using maker's diag/repair extended CD scan to return it to service enough to image it: HD Diagnostic

Keep in mind that these are experimental solutions so you should prepare for a likely clean reinstall. Adapt these steps to get a perfect Win7 Reinstall based on hundreds done here: Reinstalling Windows 7
