    windows 7 repair install

    Hi,
I'm trying to do a repair install on my computer (gateway) that I bought less than a yr ago. Windows 7 was already loaded when I bought it and repair discs aren't working so I got a windows 7 home premium disc. I get to the part where it asks for User name and password. I put user name in and no password because I never put one on my computer, it then states "the specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted", I've tried other user names I have, administrator and WORKGROUP, nothing is working and I really don't want to have to do a clean install because of pictures and personal files I have and can't get off, any ideas to help with how I can get past this is appreciated as I really need my computer as I start school Monday. Thank you
I'm also not on a domain.

You can only do a Repair Install from the Desktop.
    Repair Install

    Can you start Windows?

What is the exact problem with your computer?

Are you trying to start it and need to boot the Repair Console to run Startup Repair

Or can you start it and have already run SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker and done basic troubleshooting steps and want to try a Repair Install as a last resort before running Gateway Factory Recovery partition or disks or clean reinstall with the Installation DVD?

The links in blue above will show you how to do each of these steps with illustrations, and if you reply to the questions we can help customize the steps for you.

I'm getting blue screen of death, at different times its said 0000003B, 000000A,000000E, amdsata.sys and storport.sys.
I've been having problems with said computer since day one of purchase, technically I should have returned it. Seach files doesn't work, Ati catalyst controller doesn't work, boot.ini missing. Have done spybot, malawarebytes, repair from safe mode with it saying nothing is wrong.
If it allows me on normal mode its for about 10 secs, then blue screen, also sometimes in safemode it goes to blue screen or freezes.
Won't let check file dump, sfc/scannow, check disc.
I'm doing upgrade install from windows install disc and it asks for user name and password. When I put my user name and no password because I never added one to my computer, it states "the specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted" I am not on a domain.
I'm unable to do anything with the gateway computer I'm trying to fix and am using my old computer to check online for solution.

If you are within a year of purchase i would RMA the machine to Gateway after first using your free tech support.

An upgrade install run from Win7 (also known as a Repair Install) does not normally ask for login so follow these steps closely: Repair Install

If you're ready to move to the clean reinstall to get rid of the corrupting bloatware and useless factory utilities which have better versions built into Win7, then boot the DVD and follow these illustrated steps choosing the Custom install:. re-install windows 7

An Installation DVD never asks for login so you must be trying this with the Repair CD. Where did you get the Installation DVD? Is it a Gateway branded Recovery Disk, or does it say Win7 Installation Media on it?

I really don't want to do a clean install or send it back to gateway as I have things that I really don't want to lose.
I get to the end of step 10 Repair Install and then it asks for user name and password.

I have never heard of Repair Install asking for password, unless of course you have a password set up to sign into Win7 normally.

I have the same problem running a clean install, and cannot find a solution, it says "the specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted" when i enter a username and password even though i never set one up during the earlier stages of installation. Did anyone find a fix?? I would love some help here.

Did let the install go to sleep? If YES, do a reinstall.

Where did you get Win7? What version exactly?

Follow these steps to correctly install and stay by the machine: Clean Install Windows 7
