    Changing motherboard without reinstalling Win7x64 + RAID0


    Hey guys,

    Apologize in advance if this has been covered numerous times but i can't seem to find the right keywords to research in google and this forum.

    Anyways, I currently have a Q6600, Gigabyte P35 motherboard, 4GB DDR2 800 ram, and 2 x 320GB in raid 0 using the ICH9R chipset. The OS is Win 7 Pro x64. Ive just recently bought a Q9550, Asus PQ5 Deluxe (x48), 4GB DDR2 1066 ram.

    Is there a way to just plug in my hard drives into the new rig without installing a fresh copy of Windows? To complicate things, will the RAID config i have be a problem or the ICH10R chipset on the new motherboard be a smooth transistion and retain the RAID array?

    Start by having a look at this tutorial at the link below though you may be asking for serious issues with the RAID as Windows 7 and RAID are not exactly the best of friends to start with.

    I would seriously consider doing a fresh install!! This will give you nothing but problems.

    Anthony: Normally, it would be a no brainer to do a fresh install but i just have way too many programs installed.

    Be sure to copie out or made back-ups of the data you need to save to external media before you start this just in-case and be sure to post back here with an update.

    I personally would stay away from RAID & dynamic partition, as it seems to more problems than it is worth.

    Good news guys. It worked, but with a bit of problems along the way.

    Ive managed to get windows up and running from a Gigabyte P35C-DS3R (ichr9) to a Gigabyte EP45-DS4P (ichr10). It managed to retain my raid array. But when it booted up for the first time, i kept getting the error:

    Windows could not finish configuring the system. To attempt to resume configuration, restart the computer

    Restarting the computer only does the same thing again. Luckily, i stumbled onto a post (on this forum in fact) to boot in safe mode, get the same error, reboot, and it should continue with the setup. Feeling optimistic, i tried that and it worked!!

    Just a few tips:


    • Make sure RAID mode is enabled in the BIOS. Took me 1/2hr to figure out it was disable hence it wouldn't recognise my array.
    • Enable USB device. Rookie mistake, but it was disabled by default and i thought the motherboard USB ports were faulty when i tried to hit F8 to go into safe mode.
    • BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP! It may of been a fluke for me so always backup where ever you can.
