Windows 7: Black screen after installation

Black screen after installation

Hey guys, I'm having a massive problem here.. I'm installing Windows 7 BETA 64x Build 7600 with a 4.7GB DVD but once it gets to the 'finishing installation' part it seemingly reboots (I think?) to continue with the install but the thing is at this point in time for me the screen goes blank and all I see is the cursor which I can move around. If I power it off and then turn it back on the loading screen comes up but when I get to the log on screen the same thing happens again.

The exact same thing happens to me with Vista. I installed it like three times (the difference is on Vista it gets past the install but still won't get past the logon screen so I can never shut down, restarting is fine though for some reason) and I'm being forced to roll back to 64-bit XP which to be honest I really really don't want (no offense XP users, XP 32-bit is okay actually but 64-bit really is an unloved child)

So far I've deducted that it's not the DVDs. Another guy said it might be the RAM but I replaced both temporarily and that didn't work either.

Does anyone have ANY idea what's going on? I'll pay 1,000,000,000 internets to the man who works out what's wrong.

But really thank you in advance for any replies.

Hey me again okay so I found out that it was nvidias new 190 drivers doing it. With this sorted I could at least get back Vista but I kind of want to try out Seven, so my NEW questions are:

1) Windows 7 automatically installs the drivers, doesn't it? So if that's the case how do I avoid this problem?

2) Will installing older drivers fix it?

hm...it is the default nvidia driver doing it then...try this

When installing 7 let it get to the part where it reboots and goes to completing installation. When it restarts press either (F6,F7,F8,or F9 I forget) and boot the new install in safe mode. Let it load and you will get an error: don't press OK!. Press shift F10 and type "compmgmt.msc" and hit enter. When the computer management screen comes up go to device manager and disable the video card (not uninstall it). You will still get video so don't worry...continue the install as normal and see if it lets you finish!

Just go to the Safe Mode and install the Nvidia graphic driver for W 7.

Sorry I actually solved this before the replies, but yeah you guys were right, it was the nvidia drivers. Rolling back to 185 worked.

Hi Spider Expert.

Did you get it working on Win 7? I've installed Win 7 RTM and had the same problem, however, I've tried driver 190, 186 and 185 for my 9600 GT, but none has worked.

Anything else I could try?

Thanks!

I've got the same problem trying to get my 9600 GT to work on Win 7 RTM. Trying to install drivers in safe mode, but none of the drivers work. I've tried version 190, 186 and 185. After install, it boots up to black screen.

Can't figure out what else I need to do.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

Thanks for this. Had this problem after a fresh install, after installing a new motherboard, Radeon 4850 video card. Whatever the resolution was set to for the first boot was out of range for my monitor, and the F8 menu is disabled during the first startup so no low resolution mode.

the same thing happened to me also.
i got "finalizing installation" and then black screen with the cursor.
after waiting a long time it goes to "preparing your desktop" and then stuck (the computer doesn't freeze)
when i restart i can logon but then nothing work, i can press things but they won't open.
i go to task manager and in the services tab there is absolutely nothing.

the graphics card in this rig is HD 4870 and i installed 7 on another computer with 4870 with no problems.

see my thread. http://www.sevenforums.com/installation-setup/18936-stuck-finalizing-installation.html

Hey. Well when I installed Windows 7, after the installation the screen went black but the mouse was still there. I googled this and pressing F8 at startup (not sure what part exactly sorry I just mashed F8, but that still works, right?) and then selected "Enable VGA mode" which forces a 640x480 resolution. Then the installation continued and when I got to the desktop I installed the 185 drivers which kind of have fixed the problem (it still goes black for about 5 seconds at start up but then loads the log on screen, I'm not sure if it's still the drivers fault or not.)

Anyway to the point, I heard someone say the 181 drivers are working, personally I don't have enough bandwidth to spend right now (too much streaming :C) to see if it works or not, but I'm pretty sure going into VGA mode would work as a manual temporary solution.
