XP computer locks up, windows easy transfer to ext HDD

    I bought a new Windows 7 desktop. (ZT 7618)

I have a 3TB external hard drive. (Western Digital My Book Essential)

I loaded windows easy transfer to the old XP computer (HP m7250n Windows Media Center 2005)

When I try to use Windows Easy Transfer, the Xp computer gets as far as starting to transfer the files to the external HDD, but then locks up.

How do I get the files onto the external HDD so I can transfer them to the new computer?

    Thanks for any help,

    Bob

Is the three TB drive one partition? XP cant handle a drive of that size. You might want to create a smaller partition and test.

You'll save a lot of headaches if you just drag the active User folders to the external once you partition it smaller so XP will recognize it.

Easy Transfer can and does fail regularly as we see here. It's benefit of transferring across settings is also no benefit because hidden AppData settings when reimported are a corruption path into a fresh clean install.

You can reimport the XP folders to their corresponding Win User folders by choosing Organize>Select All on Windows Explorer from Win7, then drag them to the same folder in left-hand explorer tree, wait to release the left click until the Explorer bar expands and confirms where files are being copied/moved.

I also have a 500gb external drive. Maybe I should use it instead of the 3TB.

500gb would be better for Win XP.
