2nd computer windows install

hello chaps

I bought Windows 7 64bit upgrade version back in January and eventually managed to install it on my pc that previously had XP on it

I've got a new PC now and won't be using the old one, do you think I will be able to install Windows 7 on the new PC?

sorry if that is a stupid question!

No, it's not a stupid question.

A retail upgrade version can be transferred as long as it is removed from the old PC. The only issue is whether you would have a qualifying OS for the new system that would make the use of an upgrade license legitimate.

Doing a Clean Install with a Upgrade Windows 7 Version

It's possible to install an upgrade version on a blank drive. You can break the license agreement if you don't have a qualifying old OS on hand. That would be wrong.

the new system comes with no OS

I do have a version of XP somewhere but it seems crazy to have to install XP in order to use my upgrade version of Windows 7! so I guess I will be installing the upgrade version on blank drive and breaking the license agreement

it sucks that I need to break any licenese agreement, I guess the 'full Windows 7 version' is more expensive than the 'upgrade Windows 7 version'? *shrug* What are the implications of breaking the agreement? I've already bought Windows 7 twice (one with new laptop, one for desktop upgrade...)

You misunderstood Bob as you do NOT have to install XP to use it to qualify for Upgrade version, only have it on hand so that you don't break the EULA. This is on the honor system.

Boot the DVD to clean reinstall but if there is no OS on the HD leave the Product Key blank, then after install use the quick registry workaround in Bob's link to activate Upgrade version on a clean or wiped HD.
