Windows 7: HP Desktop Windows 7 (& Vista) Load Problems After HD Replacement

HP Desktop Windows 7 (& Vista) Load Problems After HD Replacement

I have not been able to load Vista properly or, now, Windows 7 at all after replacing my original HD with a new Western Digital Caviar Green 500 mb drive. The HP factory recovery discs did not work properly. I got may blue screen instances. Vista did seem to load but it was incomplete and unstable with a wide variety of blue screen instances over many attempts and attempted use. I got a Vista 'Anytime Upgrade' disc from ebay which seems to have a clean copy of Vista 32 bit on it. This did load Vista uneventfully using my Vista key from the side of the computer. The Microsoft key was accepted and I thought that I was in the clear and then the blue screen cavalcade began anew. Figuring that the problem was with Vista on my recovery and Anytime Upgrade media, I bought a new, retail full version of Windows 7 Professional. Neither the 64 bit or 32 bit version will load properly nor can I get as far as I did with Vista. The failure occurs in the 'Expanding Windows Files' section of the program load.

My current issues are 'The system encountered an unrecoverable hardware error.' and I get the hardware failure code of '0x00000124'. I also get the note 'BOOTMGR is missing.' at start up if I don't attempt to install Windows 7 right away. I have used the command prompt to (seemingly) successfully install the BOOTMGR but it is missing again right away. I don't have much more to offer as the machine no longer has an operating system at all.

Prior to the slow failure of my original Samsung 320 GB HP supplied drive, the computer had no other problems. The new drive passes a SMART full surface test and the memory passes as well.

Any ideas?? Should I buy yet another HD or is it time to surrender and buy a new computer or something else?

Thanks in any event!
