Windows 7: Upgrading from 32 bit Vista to 64 bit 7?

I currently have 32-bit version of Windows Vista Business and I'll get free upgrade to Windows 7 professional and now I'm wondering if I can install 64-bit version of Windows 7 with this upgrade disc I'll get. Will I get only 32-bit version of the disc or can I choose it? As far as I understand the key is valid for bot versions though? If my friend has a 64-bit version installation disc for Windows 7, can I install my Windows 7 from it using the upgrade key I'll get from MS?

It's my understanding that the retail versions come with both 32 & 64 bit. If your computer will run it use the 64bit. It just works better.

you may right. MS has some confusing rules about upgrades. If you don't get both versions (i think you will) there will be a work-a-round. just wait and see.

And what's this work-a-round? If I download an installation media for Windows 7 ultimate, will I be able to install Win 7 Professional 64-bit from it with my key or do I need some special upgrade disc?

Just wait untill you get your upgrade in October. Keep updated on this forum and more will be reveled.

Sorry but this kind of replies do not help anyone at all. Please do not post if you have nothing informative to say.

I'm still looking for some real answers for my questions instead of guessing and telling to wait. I need to know this because I don't want to wast 20+ euros for shipping the upgrade disc if I can't actually use them like I want to.

I have a retail Vista Home Premium upgrade license.

The package didn't include the X64 install DVD. I was able to get one directly from Microsoft for $10.

The license key works with both versions.

I believe that offer was unavailable to OEM licenses. I don't know whether any PC makers offered X64 to their customers who bought machines with the X86 version pre-installed.

Will the deal be the same for Windows 7? Microsoft has claimed that both X86 and X64 media will be included in the retail upgrade package, so that, at least, will be different. I suppose that the upgrade license will support both.

I imagine that you'll have to contact Lenovo to find whether you'll get X64 install media. If I had to bet, I wouldnt risk more than a nickel, but my bet would be "no".
