Migrating dating from old XP hard drive

I had a hard drive failure on my XP system, managed to recover nearly all the data and the orginal folder structure sits on my E: on my new Windows 7 system. I was very impressed with Windows 7 when I installed it - better than expected. :)

Now, I want to transfer many of my settings across to Windows 7. e.g. documents, Firefox and Skype history and contacts etc.

I see the structure is different for Windows 7. Any recommendations or advice on where my previous My Documents stuff should go? Or any other advice?

I always google how to move Firefox Favorites, Skype contacts, Windows Mail, data to a new computer to get the quick solution.

I never transfer settings over because they are a corruption path. Best to start fresh.

Your files can be dragged individually or as a group into the corresponding User folder in the Explorer bar on the left side of each Explorer window. Don't release the left click until the bar stops expanding and the hypertext confirms where you're dropping them is correct.

If you don't fancy using libraries you can do what many of us have done and that is to create a personal data partition and store all your personal files on there, well away from your C drive. It makes backups less troublesome too.

Thanks guys for your advice. It was a toss up between Win 7 or perhaps going for an iMac, which I still may do.

Of course, if you really want the iMac, you can also use Bootcamp to put Windows 7 on it as well.
