Windows 7 upgrade won't work with 3GB ram on Asus A7n8x2.0 Board

My sustem was running XP and I eventually successfully custom installed Windows 7 by removing 1GB memory stick. I am now unable to reinstall back to 3GB of Ram. I have ensured all slots and sticks work by swapping them around. In another forum I found the following advice

  • Find the "NVIDIA nForce2 AGP Host to PCI Bridge" in the device manager
  • Right-click and choose "Update Driver..."
  • Browse my computer etc.....
  • Let me pick from a list etc....
  • Select "PCI standard PCI-to-PCI bridge"
  • You will now have 2 listings of "PCI standard PCI-to-PCI bridge" and no NVIDIA nForce 2 AGP Host etc....
  • Click "Finish" and shutdown the computer.
  • Now install your RAM upgrade and power on.
After the reboot, Windows 7 now recognises all 3GB of RAM"

This worked and I could use 3GB of ram with Windows 7, but my Graphics Card Radeon 9800 Pro was stopped by windows with an error 43. So I have undone this and am back to 2GB with the Graphic Card working again.

Is it possible to do something to run 3GB with my graphic card. CPUZ text file attached re my system.

Thanks in hope of an answer !

Welcome to Windows Seven Forms.

You might wanbt to consider a clean install of Windows 7 using your upgrade disc.

Test your RAM and slots thoroughly using this method: RAM - Test with Memtest86+

As you already have a clean install from XP, you might want to try it again following these steps to get a perfect reinstall: Reinstalling Windows 7

Note that Windows 7 is driver-complete in the installer with newer quickly updated via optional Updates. Changing out drivers will get you in trouble unless performance points to one.

Both

Thanks for your responses browing the web it appears I am not alone but I can not find an answer other than the one above that stops my Radeon 9800 pro from working. From what I can make out it is to do with the nforce2 chipset drivers not being available. I think!

As you advised I have checked my memory with both 2 1GB sticks and all 3 1GB sticks and there are no errors. Next I will try the clean install again but I am not confident this will work. For info my BIos is as up to date as possible.

My old computer is grateful for your advice ! Will try a clean install.

Still Not Working

I have now completed the memory test and all tests passed. I did a clean install again and exactly the same problem. IE only works with 2GB installed when 3GB is installed it stops re loads and then freezes on a blank screen.

To double check the memory I have also started using each of the 3 1Gb sticks installed.

With 3GB inserted I tried pressing F8 repeatedly to enter safe mode start to check this and for some reason I don't seem to access the option screen.

Any other ideas

Socket A.

A motherboard from 2002.

No nVidia support for nForce 2 for Vista (released January 2007) or Windows 7 (released October 2009).

I suggest that it's time to retire this board, or at least to stay with an older, supported OS.

Sadly you are probably right !

I will have to see if it is economical to replace the board or update the whole PC.

Thanks & Happy Xmas.

Meanwhile I'd try reinstalling both the RAM sticks and the video card.
