Direct your installation to your external drive
If that doesn't work. Take out the HDD from your external and swap it with your internal. be carefull

    Install W7 on that drive.

Take it back out and put it in your external and try and boot from it.

You'll have to enter BIOS settings and change the Boot order first. Get that USB HDD to the top of the list and hit F10 to save and exit.

plz rep me if this helps

Assumes you can boot from USB.

Attach USB ext disk and boot.

I used a different technique and
    1. Booted from the USB HDD beast, (Don't remember which way)
    2. got the floating flowers,
    3. then the white stepladder, then reboot.
    GOTO 1.

Estimated time on task: 25 minutes or less.

I think it has to do with the registry and the USB drivers, having perused:
    disk.sys,
    various USB*.inf,
entry someplace of: HKLM\xxxx\services\USB???,BOOTFLAGS,0x 00010003,4 then
    "DeviceHackFlags" and in that area...

    VHDMP.inf has "Bootflags"=%REG_DWORD_NO_CLOBBER%,2
    and SERVICE_DEMAND_START=3
which may be interesting, since he'll boot OK from VHD, etc.

That was 2 months ago - dropped off to torrent iso's,
had to learn that shet too...

    Use VMWARE

    LMAO "CAN'T BE DONE"
I am typing this on a PC that I booted from a 500 GB simpletech Usb hard drive and I am currently running win 7 & on it.
There are several good step by step articles about how it's done, using VMWARE while doing the OS install, fooling the OS into thinking it's installing somewhere else.
I was sceptical but when all is done, I can run this external OS completely independent of my existing vista install.
I doubt that I could take this external HD and simply plug it into another computer, as I believe that the win 7 OS will be looking for certain things, unique to my hardware etc..
    I could be wrong there.
But the blanket statement that it can't be done, I assume is just someone being funny.
P.S. I do know that many folks might not want you to know that this can be done easily, Most work for Microsoft LMAO

So, post the steps on how to do it. Or, post some links. Or a video of your machine booting.

    You cannot add.

Post your links, list the steps or provide video proof. Any will do. What you have provided to this point will not suffice and reflects poorly on you.
