How do I restore my boot partition?

Hi,

I just restored a Windows 7 image I made a week or so ago, when boot times were as they should be - I used the Windows 7 DVD and chose to format and repartition the relevant hard disc before restore, but still the PC sits at the Windows 7 logo for almost a minute before I get the desktop. How can that be when I restored a working image?

I used Soluto to analyse boot timings, but this delay just showed as 'System' startup, with no details as to which components are taking so long to load, so it's not very useful. Is there a way to analyse the sytem startup more closely to see what is taking so long to load now?

I would try the diskpart route, but this is not recommended for an SSD of course. I would have thought that restoring the Win7 image after choosing to wipe the C drive and System partitions would have amounted to the same thing??

Check the Performance log for clues as to what is hanging startup, utilize System Resources and do the hardware testing given in these troubleshooting steps.

If this doesn't pinpont the problem then use the tool which the Pro's use to trace slow startup which will determine the cause with certainty: Gathering a Startup, Shutdown, Sleep, Hibernate, or Reboot Trace - Windows 7 Forums

SFC /SCANNOW - all OK.

I went carefully though the steps in Gathering a Startup, Shutdown, Sleep, Hibernate, or Reboot Trace - Windows 7 Forums. When I entered the string into the elevated command prompt, my PC rebooted as indicated ... half-way through booting I got a Blue Screen. I rebooted three times - blue screen every time. The first indicated BAD_POOL_HEADER; subsequently, no such indication. STOP: 0x00000019 .... (can post more if needed). Had to do a system restore (to last restore point) with the Win7 installation CD...

So even the tool I am using to troubleshoot the problem causes me grief. Ever feel 'someone up there' is against you?!

Maybe I should try a full Windows repair from the installation DVD...

Actually the troubleshooting steps suggested to work through first lead up to a Repair Install.

Do you have an installer with SP1?

I did a repair install (as if an upgrade from Vista) and luckily that fixed the problem - booting is now back to under 30". Thanks for the input,
