    Unless you have a subscription to a service like TechConnect, MSDN etc. etc. that is the only legal version available. You can use the re-arm command 3 times for a total of six months. MS didn't get where it is by giving everyone a free copy of its OS.

    I'm going to attempt to format and create a partition on my new HDD and use my old one to install it. This should work. I think.

    We really need to clear things up. It sounds to me like the OP is running windows xp and has all the windows 7 files in a folder on his desktop. He is not trying to upgrade, he is trying to clean install it. I suggest that there is a problem with the windows 7 files and he should get himself a copy of the iso and then try a clean install. To the OP...you have backed all your data up haven't you?
