    Unable to install across partitions

    Hi

I have Samsung netbook which came with Windows 7 Starter.

When it was new about of the box it was partitioned C:\ operating system and installed program files and D:\ all personal files (music, photos etc.) so that the os can be imaged and restored leaving the personal stuff untouched. All downloads go to D:\, but any installation files or auto-zip installers are unable to run. I had assumed this was an awkward restriction for Starter but it has now been upgraded to Ultimate (after a fresh install of Starter) and this very annoying problem persists as any auto-run installers fail. I have the same C:\ D:\ set up on a Dell laptop with W7 Ultimate without any of these problems.

Some internet have found suggest the problem may be restriction on Temp folders, but if I've taken ownership and allowed everything on all that I can find with out any effect.

I'm now guessing that there is either some setting on the D:\ partition that stops it sending to C:\ or that C:\ won't allow D:\ to write to it.

I can always move the Downloads location to to C:\ or possibly delete and recreate D:\ but I'd really like to know what the problem is and fix it.

    Thanks

I had the same problem with Downloads on another partition and was unable to solve it after lengthy troubleshooting. I moved Downloads back to C.

Are you able to create an image of only C? Some users who move User folders to another partition find that Win7 backup imaging then will want the second partition included in the image.

Hi Thanks for taking the time to reply.

I've had no trouble making images of single drives with either Windows or Acronis, but I haven't moved the "Users" folders - if you mean C:\Users\[user name]. I moved the locations of "Music" "Pictures" etc. through the properties pane, then location and move. I left the main personal folder in its default location as previous attempts to move that one seems to mess up the other folder locations and with library navigation the personal folder (My Documents as was) link is redundant.

Since my question I have established that I can run installers from network folders, so the fault must be with D:\ (mustn't it?).

My current plan of attack for the installation problem is to shrink D:\, create a new E:\ partition, move the contents of D over to E and delete D and then either re-create D or change the drive letter of E.

I'll post back with the results if/when I eventually finish that task, although I'd appreciate any other input.

Documents, music, pictures, etc. are the User folders aka Shell folders..

Some users find that Backup Imaging wants the data partition included if User folders are moved, presumably because these are considered System folders since the System will replace them during a repair if they are missing.

Let us know how it goes. I spent hours last year working on this exact problem without solution. That and the imaging issue has caused me to stop recommending moving User folders.

    Solution:

Shrank partition D:\, created new E:\ drive and transferred files over from D. Deleted D. Restarted. Renamed E:\ to D:\. Restarted. Expanded new D to former size. Problem gone.

Wow. Must have been corrupted permissions requiring new default set?
