Windows 7: "This copy of windows is not genuine"

My question is why would you have to install windows on the replacement.

Erm, let me see now, possibly because the original had died and the replacement was running XP.
Of course I could have gone retro and gone back to 3.11.

Your first post didn't state what OS was on the replacement machine.

I take it that it wasn't a new laptop, as one would probably not have been sold with XP at this time.

Irrelevant to the topic, though.
