"Cannot complete installation. Please restart installation."

    Hello!

Well, I built a new computer for myself, every piece of it brand new. So I slapped a brand new harddrive into my old chassis and I'm setting that one up for my parents.

I tried to install a 32-bit version of WIndows 7 via Upgrade disk on a clean drive. Worked doing the 64-bit version on my new PC, but right about when it says "Loading System Services", it says the installation can't be complete and that I have to restart it.

Not sure what to do here. Looked up some solutions but they're not really helping.

Please fill in your System Specs in bottom left hand corner of post.

Where did you get Win7? Is this a disk which has successfully installed before? Did you burn it yourself?

If so after confirming or downloading another ISO try burning another using ImgBurn at 4x speed.

Reset the BIOS to defaults: Clear CMOS - 3 Ways to Clear the CMOS - Reset BIOS. While in BIOS setup set SATA controller to AHCI.
Unplug all other HD's and peripherals.

If install fails again, post back exact error message text or you can google it yourself to see how others resolved it.

Next wipe the HD with Diskpart Clean Command from DVD utilizing DISKPART At PC Startup

    System specs?

    It's got a less-than stellar 32-bit motherboard, a 1TB hard drive disk, I think 4GB of Ram or so.

The disk I used was one that installed successfully on a previous build. I bought it from my university, so I did not burn it.

As I've stated, I did look up other solutions, but few have done any good. I'm hoping to find some fresh answers rather than dig up old ones.

At least give us your computer or mobo make and model. What OS is on there now?

We have helped countless users with these failures with a 100% success rate but you need to do the work. I gave you steps to get started on. Was I wasting my time since you didn't even acknowledge them?

Add to those if they don't work to remove all but 2gb of RAM to try install.

I don't remember what the mobo is. It was whatever came in as stock in a Dell XPS 410.
There is currently what little of Windows 7 that is installed before it failed to finish.

No, you were not wasting your time, but I had posted to answer the parts that I could. It is late in my home right now and I don't want to disturb anyone by going down now and working on the computer at the moment. I haven't tried your suggestions just yet. I will tomorrow and report back.

It has a Pentium 4 which should run WIn7 alright with the 4gb RAM. You likely won't get Aero graphics and may have problems with other hardware which could have been listed for you had you run Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor before wiping out XP/Vista.

I will be around all day tomorrow to help you. Work through each step asking back any questions to get them done. There will then be more if necessary.

Tried booting again. Says this, exactly:

"Windows could not complete the installation. To install windows on this computer, restart the installation.

Also, before I begin trying your suggestions, keep in mind that this hard drive was a clean drive that's never had an OS on it.

After booting the computer again, when the Dell splash page appears I have two options:
    F2 for the Setup
    F12 for the Boot Menu

I did F2 first, but I didn't see anything about resetting factory screenshots. I'll try to get a screenshot of it in just a bit.

    Dell System DXP061
    +System
    +Drives
    +Onboard Devices
    +Video
    +Performance
    +Security
    +Power Management
    +Maintenance
    +POST Behavior

I thought I might be able to reboot from the disk again and restart the installation, because that's what it sounds like the error message is telling me to do.

Anyway, I'm at the Boot Menu, and these are my options:
    *WDC WD10EURS-630AB1
    *Onboard USB or CD-ROM

    *System Setup
    *Hard Drive Diagnostics
    *Boot to Utility Partition

Quite obviously you need to boot from the DVD to install. You were looking a the Boot menu choice to boot DVD. Did you choose it? Why not?

I booted from the DVD again, and the beginning stages of the Installation were taking place.

When I had to choose which kind of installation (One being Upgrade, one being Custom), I wasn't able to proceed any further.

I think the Upgrade installation told me to remove the disk, let Windows start up as normal, and then restart the computer with the disk in the drive. I'm not seeing any change in the process of booting , no matter how many times I do this.

When I tried to chose the Custom Installation, I was presented with a list of partitions on the disk.
    Disk 0 Partition 1 - System Reserved - 90 MB
    Disk 0 Partition 2 - 900 MB

Wasn't able to select System Reserved because there wasn't enough free space.
Wasn't sure if I wanted to select Partition 2. I get the feeling the Operating System and what files have been installed are already on that first partition.
