Transfer anytime upgrade to another computer?

I ordered a dell laptop for my mom (xps15z). when i got it in i was on the fence about keeping it. then i decided to keep it, i used anytime upgrade on it to upgrade to windows 7 professional. After testing the laptop some more, im disgusted by the quality of it, not necessarily its performance (well besides the screen is just crap). The whole thing (even though some of it is aluminum or some kind of metal) is just plain cheap feeling. Everytime i go to open the laptop, my thumb gets caught on the some lame cheap chrome trim. (i dont see that trim lasting long). the lid/display is flimsy. it feels like a cheap toy. period. Im going to return it to dell and get her one of the samsungs that i tested out at some best buy nearby, its pretty solid feeling. its like a macbook or something.

anywho, what should i do in this scenario (about transferring the anytime upgrade). i believe the samsung will just have home edition installed, so i can use (or would like to use) this same key for it....

You can migrate Anytime Upgrade to any machine which qualifies for it as it is retail software which you own for life. To remove it from Dell run a backup image you should always make of the native OS, or run Dell Factory Recovery: Dell Restoring Your Computer´s Software to the Factory Settings

Dell's have fallen out of favor whereas HP, Acer group and Toshiba have all risen in esteem.

I was looking at the samsung series 7 chronos that has a solid aluminum body like the macbook pros. Does acer, lenovo, asus, or hp offer such a thing? in a 15" screen? which would you recommend? i have been looking for a bit now. (im straight up mac dude, but my mom doesnt want a mac.) she wants it for her business (which im the IT guy for) she thinks she needs windows, i tell she doesnt.....i do everything she does and more and i do it all on my mac. she always has issues, i never have.

but lets ignore the whole mac/windows thingy.

i looked at several of those brands, but samsung was the closest i could find, well actually i think the HP envy is nice too, but i like (or rather my mom would like) the keypad thats on the samsung....for number crunching/entering.

Just make sure to back up Samsung to DVD's as well as externally since if the tiny Recovery partition is deleted or damaged during reinstalls or repairs, there is no way to recover to factory condition without booting DVD's. Their bloatware doesn't work at reinstall unless it's in its preinstalled form either, although they claim versions which do work are available via that Recov partiton Nicole accidentally deleted.

I would back up externally a Win7 backup or other System image of the entire HD as well.

I also like having a keypad on my laptop which is strangely missing on the widescreen ones - why?

I will be making her (forcing her) haha to back up (i will do it for her too) and i will also make a clone/image before she even gets her hands on it. dvds and external drives. Im a photographer (as well), and deal with lots and lots of images, and im over the top when it comes to backups and clones.

I was confused about that thread you linked me to earlier. I read alot of it, but was a little lost. she formated and the drivers for hardware didnt work or she didnt have them?, or she just had trouble getting the crapware back on it? or she couldnt get clean install from oem disks without crapware? sorry..i was lost.

I will be wanting to wipe everything off of it except just windows 7. THIS GOES FOR ANY LAPTOP I BUY. Is it possible to use a retail windows 7 disc (even though its being used on another computer), but have it activated with the key that is being used on the samsung(or other brand laptop)? so its legit. and i dont have to buy another retail copy. im guessing the reinstall disks most these people send out has the crapware on it so you cant really avoid it?

The issues were hashed over so thoroughly in Nicole's thread that I really have nothing to add except that her Cam and Touchpad features didn't work correctly as she wanted when she Clean reinstalled with the Samsung software provided on her model's Support Downloads webpage.

Samsung was no help and made the situation worse, saying that the software she needed which works correctly was accessible only from the small Recovery partition which works in tandem with the Recovery she saved on her external. Yet we saw no evidence of this in hours of research done, only that had she saved Recovery to DVD's then it would be bootable to reinstall as the external wasn't without the small deleted partition.

They wanted her to ship it back and to charge her again to restore all of this software - something so outrageous I've never heard of it before after handling thousands of these cases.

In the end her retailer had mercy and replaced the machine. The thread remains a top Samsung search result doing Samsung damage they could have avoided.
