Did you do all recovery things from within hirens bootcd? I read it started winxp livecd (?)
Never use winxp tools to recover win7 startup issues.

Conclusion:
  • disk is and was in good shape. You could boot from it but only using hirens cd.
  • Something was wrong with bootsector or mbr.
  • Did you replace mbr and bootsector from within winxp? Wrong!! You should use win7

Kaktussoft,
  1. Yes, it was able to boot to Windows XP live CD on Hiren's BootCD.
  2. I did try the MBR and boot sector tools from there, but they did not work.
  3. I was able to perform a repair on the \Boot\BCD file so that the Hiren's BootCD menu option to force boot from Disc 0>Partition 2 would work, but it would not boot on its own.
  4. Once I was able to get into Windows 7, I used the Windows 7 tools to repair the MBR, BCD, and boot sector, but none of those fixed the problem.
But, wiping the drive and starting over solved the problem in the end.

How did you rebuild mbr and bootsector from within win7? bootsect and bootrec are NOT on win7 OS!!! Only available in recovery environment

Kevin,
Sure, I can post a screenshot, but as i completely wiped the partitions and let the Windows 7 install format it the way it liked, I'm not sure it could be compared. I also parceled out additional partitions to my taste after the install was complete.

Kaktussoft,
I used the .exe's from the recovery disc. I had copied them over from the Windows 7 repair disc to the C: drive when I was trying to run them under Windows XP live CD (but only the BCD utilty ran under Windows XP - the others did not work).

You did great, John.

From what I can observe on your partition list, your windows is installed properly as you have non lettered 100mb "system reserved" partition created by the installation process in the very beginning of disk physical map.
It's good to divide the disk to few number of partitions. But I still suggest you might want to consider shrinking your C drive to less than 100GB. It doesn't really need to sit on very large partition. With smaller drive, the maintenance process will run a lot faster (disk check, defrag, etc). You can rearrange the drive letter later (except C). You can use free third party partition manager as windows partition management won't allow you to shrink it less than hundreds GB.

Good work there, John.

Looks good to me.

You can shrink C in Disk Management, then Resize P to the left using free Partition Wizard bootable CD to take up the shrink space.

If you want to create a new partition in the shrink space, you'd need to Delete or Convert P to Logical first using free Partition Wizard bootable CD so that you free up a Primary partition, since you can only have 3 Primary and unlimited Logical. Then you can shrink C and either create a Primary with the shrink space or another Logical.
