Dual-Booting Windows XP and Windows 7 Issues

Hello, I would like to dual boot windows xp and windows 7. I currently am using windows 7 but I would like to install windows xp alongside it on a separate partition. I created the partition in disk management in windows seven and I booted from my xp disk and it goes through the beginning processes and then says entering windows setup and then goes to a blue screen saying that my computer needs to be shutdown. Please help me bypass this or something. Thanks.

You may have installed Windows Seven in the AHCI mode.
XP will blue screen because the AHCI drivers were not installed for XP.

What does the info on the BSOD say?

Perhaps a better choice would be to run XP under Oracle Virtual Box as a guest. The you can run it on the same desktop windows 7 is running on. Lots of advantages, including cut and paste between them and easy access to drives/partitions/folders between them as well.

It runs a bit slower that way but if you only need it to run some programs then this may be a valid choice for you.

I really would not enjoy a virtual box, I would much rather have the full OS. But thanks for the advice.

The problem is XP CD does not have most newer SATA drivers. You'll need to slipstream them into an XP ISO w/ SP3 CD using this method: SATA Drivers - Slipstream into Windows XP CD

Provide all your SATA drivers unless you know for sure whether BIOS is set to AHCI or IDE mode, as Sardonicus points out.

Running XP under VirtualBox is the full OS. I still think running as a guest under VirtualBox is worth looking into. It's free and only takes a little while to setup.

On my old Dell Precision 370 P4 3.4Ghz with 4GB of ram, the XP guest boots in less than 15 seconds. It sits on the same desktop as Windows 7 so I have full copy and paste support. It's a whole lot less work than setting up a dual boot system.

I find dual boot to be a pain since it means I have to shut down my Win 7 system to use whatever I'm dual booting. I am running Win 8 as a dual boot but only because my CPU does not have hardware virtualization support which Win 8 requires.

Just my $.02 worth (and I won't mention it again - not trying to annoy you)

+1 - vBox is so much easier and a lot more convenient. I run Windows 8 and Ubuntu in vBox. I would never go any other way for a secondary OS (except on my laptop where I run Windows 8 from a USB3 stick).

Ok I am trying to slipstream the sata drivers into a new install disk through nlite. The only thing is I don't know where to download these drivers. Can someone please tell me?
