With the greatest respect, I do not think this work around will get the job done.
The reason is that the 'New' Win 7 installer is now looking for an ACTIVATED previous OS. This was not the case with the Vista installer.

I sincerely hope I am wrong.
    Nosmo,

Time will tell for sure. I have heard that it may use the method I described above, or it will ask you to insert your Vista installation DVD during the installation of the upgrade Windows 7 to verify that you do have a qualifying previous Vista version.

Installation DVD? Most new computers don't come with such things anymore. Or so it seems for my laptop at least.

a sarcastic "Yay" for recovery partitions or whatever they are called.

I will be updating a fresh install of the RC since MS said it could be updated. Assuming RC Ultimate allows upgrading to Home. The rc key doesn't work if you try to install the RC as home premium.

To prevent problems I cloned a fresh activated RC install too and can restore the OS, still activated, any time.

    My current understanding is:

    (1) You can technically fresh install with the upgrade disks. In fact, they'll require it for those coming from Windows 2000 and XP.
The curious feature of this is that Windows 2000 doesn't use activation.

There has been speculation that it must pass WGA. I didn't believe that idea, though, because it effectively means that only a PC that is on the Net could be upgraded. (Activation does not require an Internet connection, although the Net connection makes activation more convenient.)

Any laptop worth getting comes with the installation CD. If your's didn't come with it you can send away for it for a small fee.

Recovery partitions are just so lame I agree. Especially when they come bloated with a bunch of ad's, those are just the worst.
