Using DBAN for Windows 7 OEM Re-install

How much worth would it be if I wipe out and erase my current HDD with Darik's Boot and Nuke before doing a clean OEM Windows 7 install (x64)? Or would there be a chance I can damage my entire system if I do that?

You can try the windows built-in tool to wipe clean the hard disk.
SSD / HDD : Optimize for Windows Reinstallation
After that you can follow this to reinstall windows.
    Clean Install Windows 7
Whether you use DBAN or the clean*/cleanall command, all data on the harddisk will be deleted including files and partitions. You'll get a hdd as it was when new.
*clean just deletes the data and not overwrite it whereas cleanall does.

There is no such thing as erasing a HD. Every sector will contain either a 0 or 1 and neither affect the data which will overwrite it which cannot even see this.

There are only two reasons I know to wipe a HD:

    1. Using Diskpart Clean All command will overwrite the data underneath with zeroes so it is nearly impossible to recover using normal methods. This is for assuring data is not retrieved and not for preparing the HD in any way.

    2. In some install failures or other corruption use the Diskpart Clean Command (quick method) to overwrite with zeroes corrupt or conflicting code in the boot sector.

In almost all cases, simply deleting all partitions using the booted DVD's Custom install Drive Options should be sufficient. Then you can partition and format as you wish, or just click Next and the installer will create and format one large install partition for you. Clean Install Windows 7

Follow these steps to get a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 which are the same for retail.

I was just wondering what was thought because on one other system, I erased the drive using a Linux utility (forget the name) by replacing all data with 0s and shortly after had the motherboard shot. We at least thought it was the mobo.

Wiping a hard drive has nothing to do with the shorting of motherboard. It could be something else like a static discharge by mishandling the computer parts.
