troubles installing windows (clean install) - error code 0x80070017

Hi all,
Just inherited a pc, and bought a brand new 1tb hdd yesterday to install windows on. I was foolish at first by not changing any of the bios settings (was a long time since I have done an install) and just left it as it was. I got through to installing windows and it stopped at expanding files with the above error code, which I have heard is really common
Windows cannot install required files. The file may be corrupt or missing. Make sure all files required for installation are available, and restart the installation.
Now I am certain there is nothing wrong with the DVD, as it is the same one that has been used on two other PC's. I tried turning it off and restarting, that was when I got another error load up - Bootmgr is missing!
After this I restarted it and changed the bios settings to boot from the DVD drive. I tried doing a repair on this through the disc. Went through all the settings and typed Bootrec.exe/REBUILDBCD in command prompt but that came back fine. I tried clicking startup repair after this but it did not restart, so I just went through the motions and restarted it manually as by this point I was getting frustrated. Upon restart I went through and booted from the DVD, and it went straight through. This time I tried re-installing but deleted all the partitions on the drive which had appeared since trying to install. However the same error message has come up again. Anyone who can solve this for me, I be tempted to send you a box of chocs no matter where you are in the world lol!
My Pc specs are
1tb Hitachi Drive 7200rpm
4gb RAM (im assuming DDR2, have not pulled it out)
AMD Athlon 3.02 Ghz (tm) 64x2 Dual core processor 6000+
Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTS graphics card

Is it possible your computer or mobo maker has a newer BIOS update for handling larger HD's? If not reset BIOS to defaults: Clear CMOS - 3 Ways to Clear the CMOS - Reset BIOS,

While in BIOS setup set SATA controller to AHCI to try install

Wipe the HD with Diskpart Clean Command then follow Step 2.2 here to format a smaller install partition and mark Active: SSD - HDD Optimize for Windows Reinstallation.

Unplug all other HD's and peripherals.

Next remove all but 2gb RAM to try install. Test your RAM - Test with Memtest86+. Then swap sticks to try install again.
