That's a good point. I don't think the HDD is the issue as the computer is reading and copying the first disc. I would imagine if the HDD is bad that it wouldn't even get that far?

Well. There is possibility for HDD breakdown. But we should wisely do things to confirm it.
There are many bootable CD/DVDs that have disk utility. Try to borrow from any friend.
Or as for simulation you can download window 7 ISO and burn it as installation disk. And run an installation, if it works then your HDD is fine. Then just overwrite it with your backup.
But surely it sounds like dumb advice and time consuming if compared to the need.

Doing a Clean Reinstall is not a compromise. It is a vastly superior install without the bloatware and useless factory utilties which have better versions built into Win7, and which throttle Win7 from being all that it can be. Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7

Once you have it installed and set up, save a Win7 Backup image to use as a backup going forward.

You may need to unplug it to keep it from interfering. But I'd try reinstalling it first, cleaning the reader.

Those who have the same issue

After Microsoft announcement for win 10 and sharing it for free I thought I might turn back my original win 7, so I wanted to recover my computer by using three of my recovery disks and by doing so I had the problem you faced "Failed to copy HDD". (My laptop is Acer Aspire ...)

My solution to this issue is that first you need another bootable disk or usb just to delete all part of your hard drive. Be careful that you must not create any new partition (C: D: ). If you create a new partition it assigns approximately 100 Mb for recovery and when you attempt to use your recovery disks after, it only sees the recovery part which is not enough for your three recovery disks approximately 10 GB.

Edit: All right you can divide your hdd and create any number of parts (D: E: ...) but you must leave one last part of your hdd that you must not create a new part just leave it along. This is because your recovery will see there and assign (C: ) for it and install win7 there.

This is not an issue of scratched dvd or disordered HDD. I hope I gave a clear explanation for the issue as I am not native.
