Here's the link to the drivers download page. The driver in question is the IDT audio driver.

Sounds as if the HP driver under Windows may be interfering with the functionality already built into HP's hardware.

Does it work correctly if you uninstall that driver?

I can't remember, I'll try uninstalling it later and see why happens.

Do the volume controls work otherwise? Is only the light the problem?

Did the light work correctly when you had preinstalled HP Win7?

Look on the HP Downloads page for your model for any hotfixes for this particular problem. Google the model number and problem description to see if others have dealt with this.
I can't find anything in the HP support pages for my model on the button colour. When Googling it I found an article that said to power off, remove all cables and batteries, and hold the power button down for 30 secs, but it didn't work. If you want to look, here's the support page for my laptop

Because I answered them in previous posts, after your last one.

Did you wipe the HD with Diskpart clean command to overwrite any GRUB code before reinstalling?

Did the installer provide a sound driver? Did you try running with the sound driver that the installer or optional Windows Updates delivered before changing it to the HP sound driver?

Are there any remaining Updates to be done? Check under Optional too.

Yes, I wiped the drive with the clean command, not clean all. I got the diver from HP's website, not from Windows update. There are no more updates available including optional ones. Without the driver it is constantly white instead of red.

Sorry, just rechecked and it came up under optional.

What came up? The same or a different sound driver?
