You will be fine to remove the letter from the 100mb partition.

To hide SysReserved partition, remove the drive letter.

BTW? Should the system reserved partition even show when using a windows RTM Disc?

Yes. That partition is created when the setup finds no Primary partition on which to place the boot loader.

I hide the partition, but it reappears

    Hello,

I installed Windows 7 64 bit and formatted both partitions (install partition and boot partition) during setup. After setup, I noticed that three drives appear in Windows Explorer:

    C: Local Disk
    D: (BOOT partition)
    E: DVDRW drive

I wanted to hide (not delete) the boot partition, then reassign the drives so that only two appear in Windows Explorer:

    C: Local Disk
    E: DVDRW drive

I have used disk management to hide the partition and re-assign the drive letters, but when another user logs into the machine, the Boot partition reappears as before.

I decided to reinstall Windows 7. This time, I made sure that the mandatory boot partition WAS NOT formatted. Format the install partition only. I believe this is the only solution to keep the boot partition permanently hidden.

Downside: You cannot ghost an unformatted partition. This solution would work o.k. if not making an image of the hard drive. *sigh*

Pre-partition the HD using free Partition Wizard bootable CD to avoid the 100mb SysReserved partition.

If it is assigned at "Where do you want to install?" screen, delete the partition also assigned for Windows 7 and expand the 100mb partition for install, then format.

The 100mb partition is most useful if you plan to Dual Boot, so other OS doesn't become unbootable if Win7 fails.

Edit revisit 7/2015: There is no good reason to remove the System Reserved partition ever. Leave it be. But as I wrote five years ago you must remove its drive letter to assure it's health.
