Attempting upgrade: "This version of windows cannot be installed"

I've been trying to upgrade from Vista Home Premium 32 bit to 7 32 bit. After a few hours it does its final reboot and shows the message above when I log into Vista. Computer is Acer Aspire 6920.

I ran the upgrade tool and the only thing that stands out to me is that is seems to have an issue with the Intel Pro Wireless thing. I updated the driver and software but still get the same warning. I uninstalled lots of software that I thought might be causing issues but still nothing, although the computer is running much faster now. I've been at it for weeks...

I located the setuperr log and see quite a few lines similar to:

2012-05-28 17:14:25, Error [0x080654] MIG Path not found for move target \\?\C:\Users\Default\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\History\History.IE5\index.dat; attempting to create it[gle=0x00000003]
    2012-05-28 17:14:25, Error [0x080656] MIG Failed to restore file \\?\C:\$INPLACE.~TR\Machine\DATA\Users\Default\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\History\History.IE5\i ndex.dat to \\?\C:\Users\Default\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\History\History.IE5\index.dat[gle=0x00000003]

The complete setuperr file is attached.

I really don't want to do a clean install, I have a ton of programs and games I've gotten from giveawayoftheday.com that I cannot reinstall. Any help would be appreciated.

If you really have IE5 then obviously that needs to be upgraded to IE9. Run your Windows Updates in Vista to make sure everything is fully up to date including SP's.

If there are issues flagged during the Upgrade Advisor phase before install begins, be sure to resolve all of them. If in doubt uninstall the program or device in Control Panel or Device Manager.

Type msconfig in Start Search box, rightclick result to Run as Admin, uncheck everything in msconfig>Startup and >Services tabs (after Hiding All MS Services), reboot then try Upgrade again.

Remember that you are struggling here to get an inferior in-place Upgrade. Nothing compares to a fresh Clean Install which will teach you a lot about your computer. With Win7 backup imaging you can save a backup image once set up so you never have to reinstall again - just reimage the HD or replacement in 20 minutes.

I don't have IE5 installed and the pc is up to date - I thought it was strange that showed up. The log also shows other issues that appear (to me) to be similar, all starting with "Path not found.." and the next error "Failed to restore file..."

I tried uninstalling the Intel Pro Wireless but that didn't help. There are a couple programs that the Upgrade Advisor said may not work after upgrade, but I didn't think they'd affect the install itself.

I did not try disabling everything in startup, I will try that and let it run overnight.

A fresh clean install is a last resort, but if I have to I will.

I thought I'd wake up to either my typical Vista login or a shiny new 7 login screen, instead I get a DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE stop error. I hit the power button and it instantly gives me the option to continue to install 7 or rollback and before I could even think about it the install of 7 automatically resumed. I guess I'll find out later...

If it stalls again and will not resume, see if you can get into the Device manager using the method in the second half of this tutorial, to uninstall any Devices in error to try to force the install to complete - then you can update drivers from desktop: Device Manager - Access During Windows 7 Installation.

Make sure you are also using the latest official Win7 installer for your licensed version slow burned to DVD or written to flash stick using the ISO download and tools provided in steps 1 and 2 of Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7.

It went through its normal cycle and rebooted into vista with the error message after it couldn't install. As far as I know that was the first time it actually stalled.

Do I have to have internet access to complete the install? I'm still getting that Intel Proset/wireless warning and if I uninstall the driver for the card I lose wifi and pc isn't hooked up with ethernet. Somebody here at work suggested to try that and just not try to let the windows installer update at the beginning.

I have a purchased DVD with Windows 7 on it, I did not download.

I forgot about another issue that it warns me about. It says that my Norton (provided by comcast) is out of date, yet I know it's updated. I tell it to stop monitoring when I attempt install but wonder if there's something else going on.

Any thoughts based on the file I posted in original message? Maybe I'm looking in the wrong file or something but since there are all those errors it makes me wonder.

I advised you yesterday to uninstall any devices along with their software which are flagged by install in Device Manager.

Uninstall Norton completely using it's special uninstall tool needed for such bloated messes:
Norton Removal Tool to uninstall your Norton product

After this run CCleaner "Run Cleaner" and Registry tabs, followed by Puran Defrag Free Edition Boot-Time Defrag with full Disk Check to prepare your HD best and check its file system.

On the new install use Microsoft Security Essentials

I will do that tonight. I know upon reboot the devices reinstalled themselves, is there a way to not have them reinstall automatically?

Try uninstalling the adapter software using CCleaner>Tools>Uninstall before running it's Cleaner and Reg Cleaner.

There was no uninstall using CCleaner or a couple other similar utilities so I was unable to remove it. I searched the registry and found a couple things that looked like they may be related, but decided to leave them instead of possibly making things worse.

Last night, after many attempts to do the upgrade, I did a clean install. All is well now.

    I appreciate the help.
